21 Windows 10 Upgrade Problems & Fixes
The Free Windows 10 Upgrade Offer wrapped up in 2016, but upgrades to the operating system continue. Windows 10 upgrade problems persist too.
Some of these Windows 10 upgrade problems are widespread. Small amounts are due to Microsoft not explaining the Windows 10 upgrade process well in the first place. You could find yourself with a frozen notebook, desktop or tablet if the right programs weren’t removed by the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant before you started the update.
Gotta Be Mobile has collected information and fixes for the Windows 10 upgrade problems that users have run into since the update launched. Note that fixing some of these problems will require an internet connection.

Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: How to do a Clean Windows 10 Install
Microsoft hopes you’ll do an in-place upgrade of Windows 10 if you’re eligible. If you are eligible for a free Windows 10 upgrade but want to start fresh you can do that too by grabbing the Windows 10 Download tool.
Update: Unless you snagged a key before the offer ended, you can’t do a clean Windows 10 install for free. You can purchase a USB drive with the operating system from the Microsoft Store.

Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Something Happened Error
Even when users get Windows 10 running on their PCs, they can run into issues. The Something Happened error is a great example of that. It’s the vaguest error message Windows 10 has.
Microsoft has a tool to automatically fix the Something Happened problem called the Windows Update Troubleshooter. If you’re an experienced user, you can manually fix this with the Command Prompt by following these instructions.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Windows 10 Will Not Run on This PC Issue
Some are reporting that the upgrade tells them “Windows 10 is compatible with their PC \but some devices don’t work.” If that’s the case for you, do the update anyway. After the upgrade finishes, you can have Windows Update download any new drivers for the devices inside your notebook, desktop or tablet that won’t function properly.
Manually check for updates after you’ve upgraded by going to Start, then Settings, then Update and Security. Tap or click on Check for Updates.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Where to Find Your Windows Key
Doing a fresh install of Windows 10 requires that you have your product key from the version of Windows that was on the PC before Windows 10. If you have Windows 7 or Windows 8, look for a sticker somewhere on your PC. If you are using Windows 8.1, the key is embedded in your device. The upgrade tool should find it on its own.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Windows 10 Is Not Genuine
According to most estimates, there are millions upon millions of PCs not running a genuine copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. If you get the “Windows 7 is Not Genuine” your computer is one of them.
Genuine means that either the copy of Windows that came with your machine is directly from Microsoft’s hardware partners or someone purchased a copy of Windows directly from Microsoft and installed it. If your copy isn’t genuine, it’s stolen and not eligible for a free or discounted upgrade. You’ll need to purchase Windows 10 outright.
Microsoft has purchasable versions of Windows 10 on flash drives for purchase at Amazon. These upgrade flash drives start at $119.99.

Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: You Are Out of Space
Users of Windows 8 media tablets are finding that they just don’t have the space to download the free Windows 10 update. For those users, Microsoft recommends the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and installing the upgrade on a USB flash drive. You’ll almost certainly need a MicroUSB to USB adapter like this one sold at Amazon for $5.23 to connect your flash drive to your media tablet.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Get Your Space Back
Users who take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade will notice that they have less storage space than they had when starting the update. This is because Microsoft store’s your old copy of Windows for 30 days. That way, you can go back to your old version if you don’t like Windows 10.
Anyone who likes Windows 10 and doesn’t plan on going back can delete their old copy of Windows. Go to Settings. Now tap or click on System. Now tap or click on Storage.
Tap or click on Temporary Files. Now tap or click on Delete Previous Versions. You won’t see this button if your old version of Windows is already gone.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Your Programs Are Gone
Before starting the upgrade, Windows 10 compiles a list of apps that it needs to remove from each system before it can install.
Once the upgrade has finished, you can install the programs the update removed again. Be careful if you decide to do that. If Windows 10’s Upgrade Tool removed a program, chances are it doesn’t work correctly with the latest updates.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Black Screen After Updating
Some users taking advantage of the Windows 10 Upgrade find that their PC only gives them a black screen afterward. The issue is sometimes caused by a virus program not being uninstalled before the update. If you’re having this issue and can get into Windows, uninstall your virus program and try the update again. Take your PC to the nearest PC technician.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Windows Update Installation Failure 80240020
Microsoft’s own support employees recommend people edit what’s called their registry to get Windows Update Installation Failure 80240020 fixed. Anyone who isn’t familiar with a registry already should definitely stay away from this and take their PC to a technician.
You can find more details about the registry change to fix Windows Update Installation Failure 80240020 here. Again, this fix isn’t for casual PC users. Messing with the registry can cause issues.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Do a Clean Install After the Upgrade
Anyone who has installed Windows 10 and activated it online can get a fresh install to get rid of any errors after the upgrade. Just use the built-in reset tool in Windows 10 to reset your PC.
Read: How to Reset Windows 10
Go to the Settings app and select Update & Recovery from the list of options shown. Select Recovery. From there, chose whether you’d like to keep your files where they are or cleanly install everything again.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: We Couldn’t Install Windows 10 0xC1900101 – 0x30018
Incompatible hardware and software are the leading cause of Windows 10 upgrade problems. Microsoft’s tools should tell you when you have a piece of software or hardware that won’t work in Windows 10, which they do. Unfortunately, it seems the tools don’t do a great job of predicting what apps will cause problems with the upgrade itself. One of these problems is Error Code 0xC1900101 – 0x30018, and it’s usually accompanied by the message, “We Couldn’t Install Windows 10.”
Microsoft says this happens because of an incompatible driver or security software. To fix the issue, wait until your PC has returned to its previous version of Windows, which it’ll do automatically. Next, the company recommends turning off your antivirus software, wireless internet, and unplugging unnecessary accessories.
Next, you need to open the Command Prompt (Admin) app and type sfc /scannow to make sure there aren’t any damaged hardware drivers on your device.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Internet Explorer is Missing
In Windows 10, Microsoft began moving away from Internet Explorer. The company is hoping that users will switch over to its new Edge web browser. You can still find Internet Explorer by using the search bar at the bottom of your screen. Search for Internet Explorer.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Can’t Disable Updates After Upgrade
Once you’ve successfully made it through the Windows 10 upgrade process, you might notice that there’s no place for you to disable updates directly from Microsoft. That’s not a bug, but a feature.
Microsoft wants to make sure that as many people as possible have the latest version of Windows 10. That includes virus definition updates, fixes and new features. To make that happen, the company is taking a page out of iPhone’s handbook. You can’t block Windows 10 updates forever.

Buried within the Settings app is the option to downgrade back to whatever operating system came installed on your PC before. Inside the Settings app go to Updated & Recovery, then Recovery and click on the Go Back button. You won’t see this button if Windows 10 was installed more than a month ago.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Poor Performance & Screen Flashing in Windows 10
Bad drivers could cause your PC’s screen to flash after the Windows 10 update. After your installation is complete, go to the Settings app and click or tap on Updated & Recovery. Now click or tap on the Check for Updates button. You want the latest software and hardware drivers made specifically for Windows 10 to download. If these updates still don’t help, considering going back to Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 from Windows 10.

Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Broken Printers & Accessories
In an ideal Windows 10 upgrade, the devices and accessories that you own would work flawlessly. Some users aren’t finding that this is the case. Either a gaming controller that they enjoy using has stopped functioning properly or a printer isn’t behaving the way it should.
After the upgrade finishes, manually check for updates directly from the Update & Security area in the Settings app. Windows 10 should reach out to Microsoft’s servers for the latest drivers. It’s a good idea to check the website of whoever produced your device for the latest drivers too. If it’s a responsible vendor, there are software updates to address any issues that Windows 10 users are having by now.
You can also manually check for driver updates through the Device Manager in the Control Panel. Right-click on the device giving you problems and select Update Driver Software.

Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Start Screen Won’t Open
Some users report that the Start Screen/Start Menu won’t open after the Windows 10 Upgrade. When this happens, try hard restarting your PC by holding its power button until it turns off. Then turn it back on.
Windows 10 users should have this issue less going forward, but it still happens on occasion. You don’t always have to do the hard restart; sometimes Start will just show up after a few moments.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Broken Start Menu
The Start Menu/Start Screen sometimes breaks and won’t open. This issue doesn’t crop up until weeks after your upgrade. In both cases, you’ll want to try Microsoft’s tool for fixing the issue without refreshing your PC. We’ve included a link to the tool in What to Do When The Windows 10 Start Menu Won’t Open.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Missing Free Upgrade
You’ve probably noticed that Microsoft has stopped offering you the free Windows 10 upgrade. That’s because the Upgrade Offer officially expired at the end of July 2016. All those that made the upgrade in time will continue to get free updates for Windows. Anyone that didn’t upgrade their Windows 8 or Windows 7 PC for free will need to pay for it. Windows 10 upgrades start at $119.99.

Where to Download the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

How to Install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update Manually
Microsoft is doing an automatic rollout of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Doing so allows it to see what issues are cropping up with specific hardware configurations. If you haven’t received the update yet, this is probably why. You can manually download the update by going to the Settings app and opening Updates & Security. Once there, click or tap on Learn More under Update Settings. You’ll get a download that’ll let you do the upgrade immediately. Back up your PC before doing this update.
Error Code 0x80070070 When Installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update
Some report getting an error code 0x80070070 whenever they try to download the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. The error indicates that the device has run out of space when it hasn’t. Windows 10 users have had success with deleting the files downloaded for the upgrade, then downloading again. You can do this by opening the Settings app. Select System. Now, select Storage. Select your hard drive from the list. Click on Temporary and delete Select Remove Files.

Since I have been updating Windows 7 automatically for the last year or two isn’t it safe to assume that my copy of Windows 7 is genuine? Plus, my computer came with Windows 7 installed on it.

Windows 7.1 is reported in the System tab as ‘Genuine, Activated’ and it should report that. Windows 10 insisted I have to obtain a genuine key. Microsoft should inform users of the problem BEFORE they take the time to install the upgrade and then have to restore Windows 7.1 or pay for an additional genuine key. Microsoft are playing a strange game.

To you two windows 10 ask for a key, because you are not using the image iso or usb with the correct language from yor windows 7 or 8 or 8.1, if you download the right image, same language like you windows 7, 8, 8,1 installed and if you have 7 ultimate download 10 pro, if you have 7 home download 10 home.
win 10 don’t ask you for a key.

I purchased a Toshiba notebook computer on a Black Friday. It was a Satellite C650 with Windows 7 installed. It has been updating Windows 7 automatically for years. However, I was not be able to activate Windows 10 upgraded in the computer. Later, I found it was not in the list for Toshiba supported upgrading to Window 10 list in Toshiba website. In another word, either the Toshiba manufacture did not install a genuine Windows 7 in my computer, which is not likely happened, or some of the Windows 7 was not upgradable to Windows 10. Anybody knows the reason?

My copy of 7 is genuine, created USB to do install, got black screen, rebooted computer, install proceeded ,install finished, will not activate, microsoft says the only way to fix it is to purchase a copy of windows for $120.00, Have original product key, doesn’t matter, they will not correct it. On the phone for 6 hours haggling with them over a free product????? Who’s great idea is that…piss off a customer over a free item. I have canceled office 365 subscription and will start looking at macbooks this week. Way to go Microsoft!

This Windows 10 Release is maddening. MS Techies have automatically (middle of the night) tried to install this version on my laptop. Besides not giving them permission to do this, each of their 12 installs has failed. They’ve also buzzed me out of bed 4 times between 1-2am to talk to me about this issue. That is nice of them, but some techies are not aware of time zone differences, and simply dial. Add to that, they send me emails about these calls, asking me to call back. I did twice and the hold times are at least 2-3 hours plus. We are told this whole thing is free, yet I’ve been advised that all who download this now (or not), will be charged for this in the future and also for all needed support issues that are theirs to fix. In years past, inexperienced MS Techies have made such a mess of my PC/Laptop, so much so, they provided proper fix and care at MS WA State. Kind of them! Apple vs. Mac Tech Support – Apple, hands down and it’s local. I, too, might take a bite of a Mac. I’m the only kid on my block that hasn’t. Office 365 – not a big fan. Overall, too busy and not at all user friendly for those who need it. Comments and/or similar situations?

Based on your information, you are most likely ready for the upgrade. You can verify it is a legitimate copy of Windows 7, and what version you are running, by right clicking My Computer (located on the desktop or in the start menu), then clicking properties. This opens the System window, which is also located in the Control Panel, and here you can view if your version of Windows is genuine and activated.

I’m getting the same thing….after the install it’s just a black screen and no matter how many times i restart it I get the same. What a total rip off! Lucky for me that i purchased a new laptop a few days prior to doing the upgrade on my old one or i would have been totally screwed. Instead of trying to purchase a copy of windows 10 from Microsoft for $120.00, I am just going to pay my local computer repair shop $65.00, and they will install any software upgrades that I desire into it because it’s included in their basic service & repair fee.

I’m having the same problem but my mouse does move around. It’s showing the boot up window icon with the circular dots under that are supposed to indicate the page is loading but they are frozen and nothing happens. Rebooting and anything else I try doesn’t seem to affect it. Been going on for 2 days now.

That’s exactly what happened to my computer for 3 days. Tried calling Microsoft online support but had hour long wait and when they finally answered I couldn’t understand what the female operator was saying. I got disconnected! Finally today I took it to geek squad at Best Buy! Costing me money but it will get fixed! Need Microsoft to reimburse me!

on mine it sits at a black screen for a little while and eventually boots into 10, i am not sure what causes it but if you give it enough time it may work. I am on 16gb dual channel ram and a 4.33 ghz 8 core processor and it still even takes me time so if you guys are using dual or quad core it might still take some time.

If the screen is black without mouse movement, you let it sit for a while and it will load. It is a problem with the video card drivers. If it has mouse movement, you can do a quick fix by ctrl + alt +del then go to the task manager. after the task manger loads, you will see your screen again.

I’ve upgraded as well and my computer is working decently but after shutting it down for the night and turning it on the next day the screen turns blank. I turn it off and turn it on yet again to start it. I don’t like that but at least I can use the computer. But I’m looking to get it fixed.

Having problems as well. My laptop came with Win 8, I “upgraded” to 8.1, I had automatic updates on the whole time and the message I get says there are no updates available. Yet I did not get the icon to install 10. I did it with the downloader, went through the whole update, restarted, and my machine is very jerky and slow, my internet is a joke and it’s not running 10. It’s still running 8.1. #ihatemicrosoftwithallmyheart

This is what I did. I got a free upgrade by reservation. The next day I downloaded the win 10 from downloader and it did install. But the message stated that I have to see an icon (right bottom corner) of win 10 but I didn’t see one. So I was confused. But I went ahead an downloaded win 10 manually. When I was starting to change my wallpaper and stuff it told me that win 10 is not activated. I went to the settings and said it was not activated that I either enter a new key code. I don’t know why because I did and followed the upgrade and installation procedure (via downloader). I was so frustrated I downgraded and went back to my win 8.1 The next day when I opened my PC again I finally saw the icon of win 10 and when I clicked it, it said 3 things. 1. Reservation – free upgrade (it has a check symbol) 2. Win 10 installed (this was in process, a separate window popped up and it was showing the progress of installing) 3. Wait for email when free upgrade is ready for install.
Anyway it took 3 days to install win 10 because I don’t leave my PC turned on. I always shut it off when not in use but every time I turned on my PC it will initiate again the installation and it starts from the same % before I turned off my PC. Finally on the last day I decided to leave my PC on for the whole day and eventually it finished installing win 10. Then after that a new window popped up and said that my free win 10 is ready for upgrade. I clicked on it and upgraded to win 10 and now finally its working and even checked on the settings (activation) and it stated there that windows 10 is activated. So far I am still figuring out how windows 10 works. So hope this experience can help you. Good luck!

I don’t know if there is a way to truly fix it, but I found a quick fix that worked for me. I use the reset button on my computer after it fails to turn on properly. For people who don’t have a reset button, you can unplug and replug the power cord on your pc or take out the battery in your laptop.

I have 2 computer and I have upgraded 1 of them and has been working fine. Today i upgraded the other computer and it was working fine and left it to finish installing. When i came back the computer was on ‘sleep’ with the power light blinking. I tried to turn it on using the keyboard and it didn’t work.. not realizing that the keyboard wasn’t reading..it wouldn’t turn off so i unplugged it and plugged it back in and restarted on its own and nothing shows on the screen, keyboard not mouse is working. I opened the case then i notice the fan not spinning.. this computer is partially new (running windows 8) before the upgrade with no issues whatsoever. I tried turning if off with the power button and still didn’t work. unplugged it again and moved the memory to the other slot and somehow that seemed to make the computer come back n with fan spinning normally but nothing else responds. It doesn’t make the beep sound or anything.. now i am sort of regretting upgrading the second computer.

I had the same problem, rebooted my pc and nothing. Black screen without a mouse cursor and couldnt even enter BIOS etc. I called multiple IT orginisations (incl microsoft itself) who didnt had solution for this problem. So i tryd some stuff for myself and i just got it working 1 min ago! The way i made it work is I removed my videocard from the motherboard to insert it back again, but this time on a different PCI slot. I started up my pc again and was supprised this simple solution actually worked. I dont know if disconnecting and connecting the videocard on the same PCI slot also works, i havent tried that. All i know is that this action worked for me. Hopefully this helps!

Same thing. Using a torch App on my mobile (!) I was able to see the screen just enough to guide me to the control panel – eventually reaching ‘adjust screen brightness’. Changing this fixed the problem for my computer. Was nearly going to use the torch to help me uninstall wondows 10! I hope this helps someone else.

Hi Bob. Found a work-around by mistake. At Windows (start) Icon select ‘All Apps’. Next select one that you know, I selected Comodo, then select the drop down Comodo icon. Right click and select ‘uninstall’ and, whalla, all your apps are there in XP-Win 7 format like the old programs and features program. I used this method to uninstall FSX-Acceleration and reinstall FSX which now works.

I had the same problem. Talked to Microsoft level 2 Tech. Turned out it was because I was running Norton Security. While in Safe Mode I removed Norton from my laptop and restarted normally. Flashing gone. I was able to reinstall Norton and it worked fine.

Thank you for your help! I started my computer in safe mode, removed Norton using the Norton removal tool I downloaded from the Norton web site with another computer, restarted the computer normally, then reinstalled Norton Internet Security by following on screen instructions. The desktop stopped flashing.

Sorry to be thick but how do you uninstall on one laptop by downloading on another. Alternatively if I uninstall on the “upgraded” machine and then go online to reinstall how to I stop the wave of crap that will come with it? Thanks
Philip

You need to download “Norton Removal Tool” from another computer and save it on a thumb drive. This way, you can open “Norton Removal Tool” from the thumb drive when you start the upgraded machine in safe mode.

To start in safe mode:
1/Press Control Alt Delete keys at the same time.
2/Left mouse click the power button once.
3/Press Shift and click restart.
4/Left mouse click “Troubleshoot”.
5/Left mouse click “Advanced Options”.
6/Left mouse click “Startup settings”.
7/Left mouse click “Restart” button.
8/Press “4” to select Safe Mode.
The following is the link to the Norton web page to download the “Norton Removal Tool”:
https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us
After running the Norton Removal Tool, you are required to sign in to your Norton account to reinstall the Norton product. Make sure that you can sign in at manage.norton.com.

Philip, thank you. I had the flashing desktop with no ability to do anything. I would add one additional step to your process. Go to another computer, download the Norton Removal Tool to a thumb drive. After step 8 and you are in safe mode. Open the .exe for the removal tool on the thumb drive, run it, restart your computer, download norton after you have restarted your computer. This worked beautifully. Thanks Philip.

I have a black screen and nothing happens when I hit Contol Alt Delete. Still just a black screen. I pulled out the battery while it was on, them put the battery back in. When I turn it on a small white bar flashes in 3 different places along the left edge of the screen. The a “window” icon is in the middle of the screen with the circle of dots indicating something is loading. Then a black screen. Left it on for over 12 hours, still just a black screen. Dell Vostro 3550.
Any ideas how I can get a screen I can see so I can go back to Windows 7?
Thanks

My Norton Internet Security software would only let me install it in up to three computers. Therefore, I have to remove the Norton license from the computer that I upgraded to Windows 10 in my Norton account in order to reinstall Norton in that computer.

This is what worked for me when all it would do is blink….reboot your computer – hold down the escape button when restarting (don’t wait for the msg in the bottom left hand corner to come up- it goes away too fast) – this will bring up system reboot program- I don’t know the numbers- but there is an option to rebuild the previous windows version w/o losing anything. It takes a moment. But I am now back on windows 7 and that’s where I’m going to stay.

Tried taking the battery out, tried pressing “esc” and going to recovery programs.. Even the Dell recovery doesn’t work, Looks like I am up for a big bill at the local computer guy. WHY OH WHY did I ever upgrade. I put it off all the time hoping that Microsoft would solve all the problems.. Hahahaha big laugh on me!!!!

Got the ok to download the free Windows 10 and been having my desktop flashing now for 5 hours between on and black screen. Called Microsoft, Dell, and a third party that i thought was Microsoft. All three told me they were going to charge me between $200 and $300 to fix my “free” download. I have tried to do it myself but the download took away my Admin. password so now I am stuck with a “strobe light” monitor and using my fiance’s laptop to find solutions. THANK YOU MICROSOFT. If you wanted to charge for Windows 10, you should have just told us it was going to cost money.

Jeff, Thanks to your post, I am now up and running. Had the blank screen and panicked since nothing I read and tried so far worked. Then I switched on HDMI screen (TV connection) after reading your post and of course it showed up. Followed onscreen instructions, clicked on next, it did it’s thing and then BOOM, my monitor came to life. All seems to be fine so far. Hope by now you got your laptop screen going. Cheers
BTW, using HP Pavilion, a little over a year old and upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1.

upon installing windows 10, the screen went blank and no activity on the hard drive. I restarted by pressing the power button and when it booted up, the screen went blank when it came to the windows login but the hard drive had activity. I restarted and the same problem occurred. So I decided to connect an external monitor via HDMI port and behold it displayed on the external monitor but the laptop screen remained blank. However, when I tried to discount the external monitor to display on the laptop screen, it just stayed blank. The same thing occurred when I tried a VGA connection. So my laptop is now operating ONLY as a desktop.
Anyone has a solution?

Started the upgrade process this morning and so far, I have experienced the following:
1. Automated upgrade prompt never progressed beyond the circle of dots. I had to go into the control panel, Windows updates and do it manually.
2. Upgrade process ran for about 2-3 hours. After I finally got to a Win 10 desktop, the upgrade process has been hammering my hard drive for another 4 hours. Tried to look at the task window, but it wouldn’t start up. I still have no idea what is going on…
3. My initial desktop had all the pinned apps just as they were before upgrade on W7. Now, for some reason, they are all gone. I guess I didn’t need them anyway:)
4. Started the upgrade at about 7 AM. It is now 3 PM and my hard drive LED is still mostly solid, but a few flickers. Hey there’s hope I may get this thing back.
5. Did a restart at 3:30 PM. Now my pinned apps are back. Wait a minute, now the’re gone.
6. That’s it. I’m going to Starbucks. Maybe I can get a Flat White with a shot of Jack Daniels.(https://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/espresso/flat-white) Hey, I live in TN, that’s what we do…
Maybe I’ll post an epilogue tomorrow.

Another issue: Start Menu not working. You know, after what Microsoft went through with W8 and not having a start menu, I believe I would really pay close attention to this in W10.
So what did they do? They broke the Start Menu. Well sort of, it works if you press the windows key, but not if you click it.

I had issues with Norton as well but noticed them before upgrading to Windows 10. Norton is the program with the issue many are facing here and not MS. I also never paid for or used Norton on my PC but it was pre-installed when I bought it. I could never completely un-install it on Windows 8.1. I downloaded the removal tool from Norton, removed it from the PC in safe mode and manually removed it and it would not come completely off. The uninstall feature in the control panel wouldn’t remove it either.
I delete as much of it as I could and went ahead and did the Windows 10 upgrade an I LOVE Windows 10 much better than 8.1 but now I am getting the “Norton Download Manager” popping up on me all the time AGAIN!!!! This is a Norton issue folks – not MS. Windows 10 actually did let me uninstall Norton but for some reason I am still getting the download manager pop up. Norton/Symantec is not being responsive about this. I actually have been trying to remove this program for about a year now with no success so I know it is not Windows 10 related.
I’m going to, once again, go into safe mode and remove Norton. It is not showing up in the Control panel but I know it is still in there again so I’ll have to once again go into safe mode and do a “regedit” to remove.

So what would you advise for guys who install Win 10 and then their preferred choice of antivirus is totally “swallowed”? I have 217 days left on my BitDefender Internet Security and I can see it in the program list but I can’t see it among the processes in Task Manager. Also, manually trying to start it with command prompt is bearing no fruits.

Had the same problem and was playing around with the settings. Did right click on the charging icon and went to “adjust screen brightness”. on the setting for when plugged in is was playing with that and sound if you set it to turn off the screen brightness it actually turned it back on. so now my settings are 100% brightness when on battery and 0% when plugged in. Hopefully they will fix it soon. other then that I am reasonably happy with windows 10, it fixed a few issues that I was having. unfortunately I have to run a windows laptop for work, much rather be using my mac.

I have the same problem. Windows state that the driver is not signed, therefore it refuses to install the driver for the soundcard :-(
David
08/10/2015 at 12:34 pm
Sounds like a corrupt driver of some sort. Go to Device Manager and look for the “yellow exclamation point” to see if there is a conflict with a particlar piece of hardware. I know graphics cards and sound cards “argue”: at times. If so you may want to hit the website of the device that’s in conflict and update it to the most recent Windows 10 driver. These manufacturers are notoriously slow in getting drivers out for new OS’s. If not try deleting the the device that’s in conflict and reboot and see if that resolves. If that doesn’t work there maybe a BIOS fix. Cross that bridge if needed.

Upgraded my W7 desktop to W10 only to get the flashing screen. Started in safe mode, same results. Went back to safe mode to reset back to W7 and now no internet connection. I can’t figure out why.
Joe
08/05/2015 at 9:22 am
Installed a different Ethernet card and that seemed to get me the files I needed to get online. Got an error that I needed to back up, and discovered my backup files are now corrupt. W10 did me no good at all. Running a final systems check to see if W7 can fix corrupt files. Transferred all personal files to my backup drive. Might end up doing a complete W7 reload. Maybe it’s older systems, my checks stated W10 would be no problem, boy was that ever wrong. W10 installed fine on my new 8.1 laptop. Wish I had never tried to install on my desktop.
Joe
08/07/2015 at 6:04 am
Since W7 was pretty much useless after the initial W10 upgrade that failed. I went ahead and tried W10 again. First I removed Norton after the W10 download. Then started the “upgrade”. Started that about 5pm Wednesday. At 5am Thursday I checked on my way to work and it was asking for my password, so I logged in. Got the “Hi” message and the “Finishing up a few things” message. Left for work. Wife called me about 9am to say the screen was just blank. Thought great, another failed install. Told her to just leave it. Got home that day hit the restart button to give a forced reboot. Got the “Hi” and stuff again. Short while later W10 was up and running. Downloaded Norton again, that went fine except it would allow me to put in the activation PIN, but showed me “protected” and allowed me to do a scan. Did a backup to my backup drive, got a message stating backup did not complete. Went ahead and just shut it down for the day. Will try again later.

After installing WIN 10 on our laptop we got the flashing screen and no use of keyboard buttons or mouse pointer. Tried several of the solutions out there and absolutely NO CHANGE so now all we have is a working flashing desktop! Microsoft you need to come public with this problem and post some kind of FIX that will work for everyone! This is now 4 days and counting without the use of a laptop that is barely 6 months old. HIGHLY FRUSTRATED at this point!

Installed win 10 from Microsoft on sunday from their is, everything working fine until today when I turned it on taking extremely long to boot up, win 10 asked for password, claims password incorrect.
Number of times entered, made sure caps lock was off, still incorrect password. F11 to restore image file, win 10 requires password to restore from image file, even changed batteries in keyboard still nothing. Have 3 recent games on win7 that I do not want to loose any data. Does anyone know how I can retrieve my password or just shut it down and try logging on tomorrow.

Kathy same problem with my HP Pavilion Notebook 15-ab019na.. No touchscreen facility after upgrading to Windows10.. I phoned the HP Help desk and they carried out a remote upgrade for the display drivers. However this did NOT work or resolve the problem. They finally admitted that HP and Microsoft were working on a fix for this and this will be applied in an upgrade ‘very soon’. Watch this space.! I am disappointed that Windowsand HP did not have this problem fixed before they rushed through the Windows 10 upgrade. I only bought the laptop because it had the Touchscreen ability!!

Hey! I hope you found the fix for your problem but this is a driver issue. You need to take a USB mouse and change which driver your computer uses to access your touchpad. It’s not too hard you press the windows key+X>device manager>Mice and other pointing devices One of these devices is your touchpad. Double click it and it will bring you to your touchpads settings. Under the Driver tab, try to rollback the driver to a previous version. If that is not an option, try updating it instead.

Well… My win 10 was working proprely. I had trouble with MS Office files that were corrupted. I dont know much about computers but may I advice you to try starting it in safe mode. Keep pressing f8 on start of your PC, and it will offer you to enter Windows in safe mode (something like that). If you have luck, you will enter, and from there, you will probably be able to fix it somehow. Good luck!

Installed Windows 10 Pro from ISO on disc to Windows 7 Pro machine. It went through all the updates, restarts and whatever else it was supposed to do. The last restart says reverting to previous version of windows. The computer restarted and I was right back to where I started with a Windows 7 Pro computer. So, almost 2 hours later I’d kinda like to know what happened?

08/06/2015 at 1:05 pm
I might have found it! Do a ctrl-alt-del. Bottom right corner, click the power button. Press the shift key, then click restart. Not sure exactly what I did next, but one of those boxes lets you go back to the previous build. Mine has been restarting for about an hour so far, with no obvious progress, but it seems like I’m at least headed in the right direction. I’ll update if anything happens.

Rick, followed your instructions and clicked on “Go back to the previous build” – Guess what? Won’t allow me to type in my password. Doh!
Rick
08/07/2015 at 11:58 am
I don’t have a password, I left the box blank and continued. That part seemed to work. But it started restarting about 3PM and 24 hours later, still going. I don’t know if I should let it go or stop it and try again. Would I even be able to try again? There might not be an OS by now.
Rick
08/07/2015 at 1:52 pm
Well, I held the power button till it shut off. A few minutes later I restarted it. A black screen came on saying it was restoring my previous version. Didn’t know if that meant 7 or 10, but in about 10 minutes, 7 was up and running. It looks good as new, like nothing ever happened.

I did the same steps as Ricky. When I upgraded to Windows 10 my screen kept flashing for at least 5 hours. Decided to go back to my W7. Did exactly as Rick..when blue screen kept saying restarting I decided to hard boot and black screen and message saying was restoring my previous version/ About 15 minutes later my w7 came back. Everything like before. Will not upgrade until all bugs are fixed

Jeesus H. Christ. So much whining, and most of these problems quoted in this thread is easily fixable (read the damn comments, people), or you’ve been very unlucky and have received a failed Windows 10 update (it happens) – go back to previous version (the steps are described in this thread), and after you’ve verified that everything works and is back to normal, redo the upgrade. AFTER checking to see if you have any apps or other stuff that might be an issue in Windows 10 (you can do this via the update icon).

I would go back happily to Windows 7 but since I cant open any applications, settings, control panel, command prompt, or even Edge or Google Chrome I am a little stuck, And quite frankly saying that some people might have received a failed upgrade! I have been trawling the Internet for several hours and all I can say is that there sure are a lot of failed updates out there. Lots of angry upset people.

I changed to Windows 10 via the free upgrade it all worked fine until virus software update (AVG) then when the laptop restarted I had nothing. A constant message saying put in reboot disc and press any key. I can’t even get on my laptop. Went to pc world and they said they can do a reinstall but I’ll lose all my files, all photos and documents. I was told that reinstalling Windows 7 will sort it out. After I upgraded, I could no longer log into my e-mail, use simple functions like copy and paste and have what I’m typing remove letters. I updated both my computers to Windows 10.
The first 2 days I was happy as before I had Windows 7 starter and it honestly sucks ,XP Pro was so much stable and user friendly.
But then out of the blue for some unknown reason my anti spyware started getting rid of things ,Windows 10 didn’t allow me to use a program I have to watch videos and instead made like “mandatory” to use Windows media player and the task bar was not working well so I try to reset it: didn’t fix the problem, tried to roll back to 7 :it doesn’t allow you, and now I don’t know how to fix this big mess.
In my other computer is working fine but accesses to C and programs is not that easy. I am not THAT happy with 10

i downloaded the windows-10 online, but while installing, it didn’t complete the said task and started with the win-8.1 which i already have…and above all IT STARTED TO DOWNLOAD WIN-10 ONCE AGAIN AUTOMATICALLY, though at the section of “RECENT UPDATES” in the control panel of the laptop; it shows the INSTALLATION of win-10………… so i downloaded the complete set-up once again YET the same problem, REPEATS.
WHAT’S THE POSSIBLE SOLUTION? if someone can please mail me at —>[email protected]

if you are on 8.1 then you should see a windows icon in the bottom left. when you open that you should see a button that said reserve your copy or something similar. click that and use the email that is registered on your device. then close it and reopen it about every five to ten minuets and wait for it so say something different in the bottom left button. if I am correct it should say something like check download progress or download now to something along those lines. I don’t recommend using an iso disk because it is not downloading the files correctly. use this method and it works perfectly every time.

Did my desktop, laptop plus a few others without a problem. But Prior to starting I ran updates and also checked the Optional ones for any device drivers that may be there as they don’t auto install unless checked to do so. Also a few weeks ago Norton’s 360 flashed me a pop up that a new update was ready to load to prepare for win10. Even Norton Security had an update when I ran LiveUpdate. I normally wait a few months for the bugs to be cleared out before doing any updates like this but this time I wanted to see 8.1 gone. So far so good on my end.

I installed my FREE copy of Windows 10 and when it was finished the screen had some blank icons and then they would fill in while the entire screen blinked. I finally restarted the computer and forced it by pressing the ESC button and somehow got to a HP factory install screen for Windows 7, didn’t wanna lose all my date, pics, etc, but I had to reinstall Windows 7 to have a operating laptop. Of course you know how long it takes to re-download your antivirus, find all your passwords, etc. Microsoft owes us all. I’ll just stay with Windows 7 because I’ve already had a large loss of data not to mentioned about 5 hours of time to reinstall 7 and settings. My wife had to spray me down with a big can of red-ass spray before it was all over!

I want to thank Philip who posted the information on 8/3/15 at 2:12 pm on how to access safe mode and remove the Norton Antivirus software. Uninstalling Norton corrected the screen flashing and lack of access issues that were rendering my PC useless after the Windows 10 upgrade. The clear and concise posting of work instructions is something Microsoft sadly did not have readily available when searching in their knowledge base. Thanks again!!!

Why the f*ck would MS have an article pertaining to the broken piece of trash that is Norton? I really, really have trouble with the IQ of a lot of people commenting here, blaming MS, saying they want compensation… seriously – if you’re all that incompetent, get someone to fix it for you – PAY someone to fix it for you. It’s what you do when you can’t change the oil-filter on your car.

Upgraded to 10 on my 4 month old PC – after using half of my internet allowance and approx. 6 hrs I could not login using my previous pass word. Contacted Microsoft eventually (95 mins) and after approx. 1hr with a poor English speaking technician I was informed that my computer files were corrupted and I would be contacted by a level 3 technician who should be able to fix the problem. I declined and insisted the computer be returned to 8.1. Apparently the system has a built in programme to do this, (says something about their confidence in the product). Eventually it all came together. Typical Microsoft rubbish – my next computer will be an Apple Mac!!

Here’s a stumper puzzle for all you techies… I installed Windows 10 and now my Intelinet wireless dongle (Cisco wireless USB mini adapter) no longer works. I use a cable router for ISP, but it’s not near my desktop, so use the dongle to grab it wirelessly. I reinstalled the driver from the disc, and tried to use the restore feature to before I installed 10, but no go. No restore points existed anymore. I cannot access the Internet from my desktop without it. Do I need to buy a new dongle? Will there be one that is compatible with 10 already? Am I screwed?

Just checked windows update, it has 32 failed attempts to update to windows 10. Free upgrade to windows 10!!??. Good joke Microsoft. Tried all the workarounds on the internet. Still no windows 10. This update is useless and a waste of time.
Ørjan Langbakk
08/09/2015 at 8:31 am
So, you’re an idiot, and therefore the update to 10 is useless and a waste of time? Yup, that makes sense. To force it (I’m assuming you’re on Windows 7?) go to the manual download page, download the usb-tool, and chose “upgrade” instead of downloading the full version. The update will start just as it would if you did it via Windows update.
Phil
08/09/2015 at 9:20 am
That’s very constructive advice you moron. Try reading. I said that I had tried all the workarounds and I still have no windows 10. I have better things to do with my time than waste it on failed Microsoft updates.
Ørjan Langbakk
08/09/2015 at 9:27 am
I do this for a living. By now, I’ve probably updated a couple hundred machines to Windows 10 – have some of them had problems, either starting or finishing the upgrade? Definitely. Have some had problems starting up? A couple. Display/graphics card not working? You betcha. Have ALL OF THEM been possible to fix? Yup. Apart from a couple laptops where sound no longer works (this is a known problem), there’s been no problems getting them to run, after a bit of trial and error.
Hence, I’m calling PEBKAC. You can’t get the update to run? If so, you’re doing something wrong, you have disk-space problems, or a defective drive. You have a bad internet connection, or you haven’t done everything you claim you have. Simple as that.
Blaming your problems on Microsoft is not just stupid, it’s bordering on irrational.
I’m no huge fan of Microsoft, but I do appreciate that they’re trying to fix and improve their vision of their software, and so far, Windows 10 is a good operating system. That there will be some problems with hundreds of thousands, if not millions different setups, is a given. However, most of the complaints here goes to show that people have no clue what they’re doing, and complains when something doesn’t go 100% smoothly, instead of just googling, trying, and fixing it. Sorry, no sympathy from me. If you can’t get it to work, hire someone like me to do it for you – but don’t bitch about it costing money, and claim that MS should pay since you don’t know how to use your hardware.
Lynn
08/12/2015 at 7:59 pm
I’ve only just learned how to use a comp./laptop and I got it figured out I agree with O. Langbakk It tells you how much disk space you need to get it done. I don’t know a whole lot about this but I think Microsoft knows what they are doing and most of you don’t! I have a question for you Orjan “under settings then apps and features are a bunch of unavailable apps at end of listed ones, can I /should I uninstall these? Or leave them alone,Are they using MBs/KBs that I can Free up? I googled this and it sent me to this just about left when I saw that it looks like you could answer this question. THX if u can!

So..i installed windows 10 without a hitch, i love the layout and it seems to be working wonderfully with one exception.. by going from 7 to 10 i lost all of my photos, music, movies, and documents. No biggie, i can always sync them back up since i have them saved in my cloud right? wrong.. i synced them all back in and they stayed put perfectly, until, i shut off my laptop and went to bed. the next day i woke up and started it back up again and POOF all my pictures and everything were gone once again. Its like the computer is incapable of saving all of my things once i shut it off.. i dont get how to fix it and im soooo computer illiterate that i wouldnt even know how to begin making it work. Anyone have advice? Id love to hear it. for now i just went back to the 7 since i can count on it :)

Updating from Windows 7 SP1 to Windows 10, it gets about 70% done (mostly throught hte drivers & features portion) tries to reboot, and I get a light blue screen with this message:
“Inaccesable boot device”
Then it reverts my OS back to Windows 7.
Any idea how to fix this so the update can actually happen?

The Get Win10 app says my CPU is not compatible.
I have checked all the other minimum requirements and my sustem meets them or exceeds them. The issue is with my CPU which is an Intel Core 2 Duo 6700. I have checked to see if it meets the requirements of NX/XD, VT , EM64T,SSE2 ( PAE ) which it does, my bios indicates the the Execute Disable bit is enabled. Yet it still says CPU not compatible.

Ørjan Langbakk..m8.. u may have done hundreds of these upgrades.. but you havnt taken into account
the simple fact that MS harrass until the inexperienced say ok… most believe that MS have done a few tests to see if security software is relevent… but most users just expect better guidance from MS.
i read the page of instructions.. and believe me.. no win 10 for me..having used win 8.1 for a year.. to go from 7.. to 10 .. is like goin from my small car to a 474 jet.

And this is why stuff like this is so relevant: https://coding2learn.org/blog/2013/07/29/kids-cant-use-computers/
People can’t use computers. Some can, of course, but in general, everyone are idiots when it comes to tech. Maybe not using it on a daily basis, but fixing things that go wrong.
I do understand that a message from MS saying “upgrade to Windows 10” might seem like a good idea to some, but why would you do it without doing any kind of research beforehand? That implies you click “ok” on anything – congratulations, you’re most likely infected or part of a bot-net. And, you can’t use a computer.
Your screen doesn’t work, your mouse doesn’t work, something doesn’t work after the upgrade. Then you start searching for solutions to your problem. Remove the drivers currently installed for the devices, and install a generic MS-driver for said device – I’m betting that in 95% or more of the cases it will work. Not perfectly, but it’ll work. Then you go on to find a working driver for said device, that will allow you to play games and utilize the device properly. If you don’t know how to do any of this? You can’t use a computer.
You can’t get the update to install? There might be a lot of reasons for that. Google, try the obvious solutions (delete the downloaded updates from the Windows-drive) and try forcing the update via the command line. Still not working? Download the USB-tool and chose “upgrade”. Still not working? Then you have a problem – maybe it’s a problem with the computer, but most likely it’s a problem with Windows. Go the hard way, download and reinstall clean.
These are not rocket-science level hardships. They’re things one should know if one is using a computer. And as I’ve stated earlier, this is a little bit like knowing how to change tires on your car, how to change an oil-filter, spark plugs or just filling up anti-freeze. It’s something you just should know.

All you have to do is let your comp boot to the black screen, once you see your icon (mouse pointer) then hit the CNTRL key once, even though you do not see it, the password box is now up and you type in your computer password and hit enter, immediately your icon will disappear. Give it about 3-5 minutes and your comp ill come up. Here’s the issue, the alienware x51 and other models believe that there are more then one display attached to your comp and unfortunately it is defaulting a phantom monitor as your main screen, reason you see black is because you are stuck on the “login” screen but just cant see it. Once you do this you are in! Here’s the thing, once you are in you have to change your display settings in control panel in order to shut off multiple monitors and default your monitor as primary or you wont be able to see anything when you open it as it will be on the “phantom screen”. You can do this very easily by opening control panel and hovering over the icon for it on your bottom task bar, then right click and click “move” then move the screen from left to right, it sounds hinky but it works! Once you get the control panel screen in front of you now you can change your display and all will be perfect! This takes a total of 5 minutes and will work! DO NOT REFORMAT YOUR COMP AS YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING…. Chances are everyone who gets the black screen simply has a “password” protection on their comp and needs to be entered without being able to see it and the WINDOW 10 is there and working perfect but they just cant see it….

“the alienware x51 and other models believe that there are more then one display attached to your comp” – that’s the very essential truth.
Read the above quotation again.
Now, what you call a “phantom monitor” is in fact what Windows detects as a secondary screen in Extended view mode.
Ever used more than one screen on a Windows-based PC? Everyone who does, uses them in Extended view mode, unless he/she has to use Clone mode for some screen colour calibrating and stuff. If you unplug your primary screen in that configuration (= that’s the only screen that shows you video up to the login screen, and the only one that shows you the taskbar and the start menu after you’ve logged in), a working graphics adapter will detect that and will change the video distribution among your remaining screens, so that one of those will become your new primary screen.
With this problematic Windows 10 update, it does the very opposite. It keeps detecting (and of course sending video to it) a primary screen, that you do not have physically attached :-O And on your current monitor it displays what it should on a secondary screen (which is – before you succeed to log in – nothing but a mouse cursor at best).
So with all this in mind, the easiest fix that many users have already mentioned here is to simply connect yet another monitor – if you have one.
But even if you don’t, you can still cut down on the proposed 5 minutes fix by simply omitting the blind mortal combat keyboard mouse training, and instead using the maaaaaagical keyboard shortcut Win+P when your PC boots up into that black screen.
Be patient and give it a few (tens of) seconds afterwards. If still no change, try to hit P more than once, while you’re holding down the Win key.
You should end up in your primary screen being displayed on your physically attached monitor. Adjusting the rest via Windows control panel /graphics properties will be fairly easy then.

Upgraded a Del Inspiron laptop N5030 after the install the onlt display i got was the windows logo and the rotating lights below it after that a blank screen. after some recearch I pluged in a monitor and windows 10 is there . so i went to the DELL web sight to see if there was a display driver upgrade only to find that (all though MS said that the laptop was right to upgrade) del states the the MS10 OS is not supported on my model.. When is MS going to be held liable and responsible for the SHIT they release
Ørjan Langbakk
08/11/2015 at 3:34 am
There’s already been descriptions on how to fix this problem – it’s that Win 10 discovers a secondary monitor (a ghost-monitor) which is set as the default one. Just go into the display driver and select the laptop-screen as default monitor, and you’ll be good to go. And again, get off your high horse – this is NOT something MS is liable for – where in the world did humanity get so damn entitled? I’m guessing you have a home-license, maybe a pro-license at best. Where in the world does it say ANYTHING about MS being liable if something doesn’t work 100% with your hardware?

I also think that people might just need to be a little more patient. Mine went to a black screen after rebooting. I could hear the hard drive occasionally running so I just waited. It rebooted itself a couple more times (the screen blank the whole time). After a couple reboots (maybe 25 minutes), a screen saying “Updating Windows” came up. It also said, “Your PC will restart several times. Sit back and relax.” It also said that it was at 28%. I figured it had been doing it the whole time, I just couldn’t see it. It is now at 81%.

I installed Windows 10 on an 8.1 based system. When I had Windows 8.1, everything worked great. Videos were fast, gaming was fast, everything was fast. Now, though, whenever I play a video, no matter what app or web site it’s on, it will most always have a delay. For example, the picture will freeze, but the sound will keep going. I have to replay a few seconds of the video in order to correct the problem. It does the same thing with games as well. It will either freeze or it will blink out all together and go to the home screen. The bottom line is this: ever since I upgraded, my computer’s performance has been lagging considerably. Microsoft! Why did you fix a unbroken operating system??!! I’m seriously considering going back to windows 8.1. If anyone in the community has a suggestion as to what I could do to fix this, please, tell me!

I should have known better than to trust the Mircosoft would have it right out of the box. After having problem with Vista 64 bit, win 7 it was dumb to expect win 10 to actually work. I have decided to wait for several months before installing win 10 on my 5 machines.

For the black screen try going into safe mode, then run MalwareBytes – it’s an anti – malware program. Use the program to delete any malware that it finds on your system ; then reboot. You can get the free version from : download.com I can’t guarantee this – but it may be your fix. Good luck.

I keep receiving the “Windows needs more space” message, at which point it lets me select another drive to use (a micro SD card, 16GB) and it will complete the download and begin the install, and upon the restart I get an error message “please insert the external memory device” or something like that. The microSD card is in the slot and I’ve tried taking it out and putting it back in but nothing seems to help. I’ve tried the install 6 or 7 times now and have gotten nowhere. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

My Lenovo laptop kept telling me to reserve my windows10 upgrade. Well, I did just that, and when it was available, I tried installing it, it was a nightmare. After installing it, it was flashing with no message. I decided to just shut it off. I went back to restart it tonight, my password would not work. The funny thing is, it is telling me the hint. So, I am thinking to myself, this thing is demanted.
I am just going to call Lenovo first thing this Monday. Lenovo is an awesome company, their people will get to the bottom of this.

My Windows 7 Pro installation was done sometime ago by using a Windows Home version Upgrade from XP. (i.e. had XP installed and then applied Windows Home Upgrade), After that I upgraded to Pro by paying for a Pro key from the Microsoft Store. So, the Windows 7 Pro installation that I’m starting with is really a derivative of two prior upgrades (XP to Home to Pro) each with it’s own product key. From reading info about the installation tool, I’m thinking that this is going to be problematic if I try to upgrade. Likewise if I try to do a clean install, I’m thinking that using the Pro (or Home) upgrade key will also be problematic. I don’t want to start the Upgrade or the Fresh install process only to find that once I’m into it, I get a failure because of product key and am left with a non working computer or worse. How would you recommend that I proceed? Which product key should I use if I were to do clean install? (the original Home (Upgrade) or the purchased Pro (Upgrade) or ? Thanks in advance

i have dealt with the black screen twice in the past week, once on a laptop and once on a desktop. no real ‘fix’ was achieved but i worked around the issue on both.
DESKTOP (with Nvidia graphics card installed)
on this system the manufacturer splash screen would show fine but as soon as Windows began to load the screen went black. I entered the BIOS on the next boot and enabled Legacy Support, after this the video worked fine.
Laptop
same symptoms as the desktop but I noticed on my way out of the office with the lights out that I could just barely see the desktop. I connected an external monitor and checked the power settings. The slide bar for brightness was set to 100%. When i slid the bar to 0% which should be a dark screen the laptops’ LCD went to full brightness. Somehow during the upgrade some things went backwards.
i hope this helps some of you that are experiencing this issue. I know they are not a fix just a band aid but hopefully an update or patch will come out soon to truly repair the problem

I had bought a used computer with Windows 7 pro and the upgrade to Windows 10 was perfect. I have a Samsung laptop that came with Windows 7 then upgraded to Windows 8 and everything was fine. Now I trying to upgrade to Windows 10. It will download to 72% and then stops. I then have to do a forced shut down because the computer is frozen. When I restart Windows 8 is still working fine but when I click the update Icon it starts the download all over again. I’ve been trying to do the upgrade now for 3 days and haven’t made any progress. Any solutions??

OK this is for the people with the screen that goes black when plugged in. For me anyway, the update switched the meaning of full and no brightness. so at a 100% brightness its at its lowest or even blank when plugged in. The fix for me was to turn the brightness off or lower it until the screen was visible.

Less than 2 hours after seemingly updating to windows 10, The wheels started falling off. I called my security company, Avast (Windows recommended them) to see if they could find the problem. They counted 350-some Trojans in the works. It seems they got in after the Windows 7 was removed and in the 10 minutes (Yes, 10 Minutes, they showed me on line) before the Windows 10 was downloaded. Where I live must be cursed! This is the 2nd time I’ve nearly been wiped out. The first time I was! I had to pay $300 to Avast , to have the Trojans removed! Damned if I can see why its on my head, The money was earmarked for some bills, now we’re wrecked again!

A few good advices before upgrading: Uninstall your current antivirus, as it can cause you to start with black screen just after you have upgraded. Uninstall all programs you don’t need, and If your on a Thinkpad then uninstall all Lenovo software but make a list of it first and then download newest version.
If you are using a thinkpad and already upgraded and have constant HDD activity then I suggest to uninstall the following: SystemInterfaceFoundation.exe, systemupdate507-2015-07-01.exe, ThinkSettingsDependency.exe – then re-installing them 1 by 1 untill you find which one is causing it, for me it were the SystemInterfaceFoundation.exe which is required by Lenovo Companion(Forced upon my system without consent). I’m done installing any of Lenovo’s shit programs.

I’m upgrading from a PC that was originally Wndows 8, then upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I can’t indefinitely turn off the “sleep” feature that would keep the screen from going black(inactive) after a period of inactivity. When I restart the load, does that start from the beginning? or is it partially installed and just need to complete? Also, does the interruption corrupt the install?

Flashing screen after upgrade on Dell Inspiron from WIN 8.1.I FINALLY had luck! I called Microsoft and was on hold for 30 minutes, got a tech. Uninstalled Norton/Constant guard. BAM! WINDOWS 10 works. Not sure if all my Office Products work yet, will tackle at a later date. Internet and such is rockin! Happy with the FREE service I received, till they tried to tell me I had 6 viruses on my machine and for $150 they could remove ’em. I was polite and then called Comcast Constant Guard Support in India and they helped me reinstall the anti-virus. I hope this helps some of you, frustrating, but fixed. Microsoft number I called was: 1-800-642-7676. Thanks again for sharing your issues and PLEASE post your solutions. TOO many forums like this and we never find out the end result when one is found….! 1-800-642-7676 – Microsoft.

The upgrade finally loaded and I am now on Windows 10. If my programs didn’t crash every 2 or 3 minutes I would be very happy, unfortunately I’m not. I’ve been reading about the problems that people are having going back to their original Windows and I’m not excited about trying to go back. Any ideas on what I can do to stop the crashing. Windows 10 isn’t all that bad its just everything is so slow.

I had updated my win 7 laptop to win 10 a week back and wanted to get rid of windows 10. After clicking the Go back to win 7 option, the system restarted and has been showing a blank screen (the one when your laptop is turned off) ever since, but the system power lights are on and nothing shows. I don’t know if the downgrade is complete or if I restart the laptop will it take me back to win 10 at the very least…..STUCK!!

I found a simple solution to the black screen problem. Windows 10 has a new brightness setting that disables the backlight of your computer. To fix this, try using the brightness adjust buttons or if you have a laptop, unplug your power cord. If this fails, try connecting your computer to another monitor.

Win 10 upgrade installed. Everything working except..The most IMPORTANT…. NO INTERNET ACCESS. I have re-installed five times now. Tried all the fixes. There is nothing wrong with my router. All my other computers, including two laptops, one has Win 10 on it, working perfectly. On my main computer(three months old) Win 10 will not work with Ethernet/wifi onboard or with external Belkin/Netgear dongles. The external are brand new, so I have all the driver discs.
Microsoft should issue a fix. I am not the only one with this problem, google it and see.

Really? I have an Dell XPS L502X and it died1 It will not turn back on since last Sunday! I should had back up my files to an CD. I have read that certain Norton anti virus software are not compatible to Windows 10! I have Norton 360 in which out of no where it upgraded to Norton Premier Edition version 22.5.2.15.I think Norton is responsible of my computer not being able to power on and to boot to windows! I did get the invitation to get windows 10 when I am currently running Windows 7 Professional. I hope it was really ” Genuine Windows with the product key. I am so upset when I upgraded my Dell XPS L502X back in 2013 with a new mother board, hard drive right click touch pad and power button. I contact Norton headquarters and waiting to see what they are going to do about my problem.

All images on my screen appear to be elongated vertically no matter what I am working on. This includes all the shorcut icons on the display screen and the desktop background screen. This includes some penguins that are elongated vertically. Microsoft Word and Excell pages are elongated vertically also . I have searched all over for a solution without success.

So when you have 2 disks within a system, common config for a Dell system, and disk 0 is not the system or boot disk, drive 1 is, then windows 10 will fail to upgrade.
the simple work around for this, go into disk manager, and deactivate disk 0 (normally just a data drive) and run the upgrade. then once completed, enable it again.
the reason for this is that old DOS always used to look for disk 0 as the first item to boot from and use and for some reason windows 10 seems to look at this drive, disk 0, when rebooting for the first time. it then cannot find the install data and it then roles back.
this has taken me a few weeks to work out, but now windows 10 is all installed. the error reported is the generic error about file missing.
MS states that you should stop the update service and remove the windows update databases etc and try again. however it will always fail, as i found out.
just make sure that the disk 0 is not the system, active or boot partition before deactivating it

What the hell is Microsoft playing at, I’ve been pestered to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 on my Toshiba, so when I finally gave in and pressed “upgrade” it went through a process that froze the damn machine for 6 hours without any instruction as to whats happening and now it’s trying to restore my previous version which again is taking forever.
My advice is don’t do it, delete anything to do with it!!

I upgraded from windows 7 and when it was done after going through all the settings I opened my user and all my files were gone (pictures, music, documents ect..) but all my programs were still there. I found the files in the OS under users/myname and moved the files from there to the folders under “ThisPC” then the next time I turned my computer on all the files I had moved were missing but the files on the other user had been restored. What happened to my files?

I had an update which was offering special tweaks for Windows which updated itself while I was not using the laptop. After it finished I got into fb and it froze. Tried safe mode and repairing which it told me to do and then nothing. Had to take it into a shop at a cost of $138 to get windows reinstalled. Got in touch with microsoft and they asked me if I had got in touch with a tech but could not with no computer working havent heard from them since. Also want to be reimbursed for their screw up

Upgraded to win 10 in late August. No real problems. In October I found a problem where I count no longer run games Iciv3′ aoe, etc). Also found out you can not go back to previous version after 30 days. The problem is MS in their Godlike manner decided not to let us run older games anymore. They did this by NOT letting WIN10 run “secdrv.sys” anymore. I am so mad and going to Apple real soon.

first the taskbar flickering, which is very annoying
second is when the system goes to sleep or shuts down, it works like normal but once its about to shut off it will spin the cpu fan up and the power and sleep lights blink 10-18 times then will shut off, although it does resume normally

Imagine if our cars ran like computers. We’d never be able to drive them. Dead cars all over the road. Why upgrade and subject yourself to all these possible problems if your computer is running well? Doesn’t make sense. No Win 10 for me. I’ll keep using 7 til it won’t work anymore. Then I’ll throw it in the trash and get back to my life the way it was before computers. It’s just unbelievable that they can’t make these “piles of junk” work right without the constant updating and troubleshooting.

I agree with you — if it’s running well. I have Windows 7 at home and am not messing with that at ALL! I love it and, since I’m on dial-up, it would take several months to update to 10 anyway. LOL! Glad I finally found a way to get rid of the notification. But the Windows 8 computers we’ve got were/are piles of junk, so took a chance. Worked in one case. In the other, not so much. :-)

My friend has a laptop with Windows 8 on it, which she hates. When she was telling me about it last week, I said, “I had the same problem. Upgraded to Windows 10. Don’t know that it made it better — maybe a little faster — but it certainly didn’t make it worse.” OMG I am eating those words now. She tried updating, it never finished, and now she can’t use it at all. I’m picking it up today to try to get it working for her, and pages like this are exactly what I need. So, thanks — I hope I can find the solution here!

I’m thoroughly frustrated with Windows 10 upgrade – when I first tried to upgrade, I received a notice that the upgrade failed because my PC (a Lenovo dual core machine) had a graphic card (a GForce 6200) that is incompatible with Windows 10. I therefore upgraded my card to a AMD Radeon HD 5450 (which I had installed in another PC a Lenovo i3 that had successfully upgraded to Windows 10 and running beautifully!). However when I tried again to upgrade to Windows 10 with the dualcore Lenovo PC, I keep receiving the same message as before – that my PC had a GForce 6200 graphic card that is incompatible with Win 10 – despite the fact that I’ve already changed the card to an AMD Radeon HD. Does Windows 10 upgrade refresh a compatibility check each time during an upgrade attempt, or does it just repeat an old message ad nauseum without doing a new compatibility check? I also tried to get to help from a Microsoft technician but they keep rejecting my old hotmail account ID and won’t issue me with a new account. Can anybody anywhere help, please!!!

Upgraded to Windows 10 late last year and all was working fine at first. Now my Windows Mail app won’t open and when I log in (using my Microsoft Live Account) and open Task Manager it shows Disk at 100% for a long time and also occasional CPU spikes. When my wife signs in using her Microsoft Live Account she cannot even open the start menu. I am using a Sony Viao but only have 4Gb of RAM installed. Do I need to upgrade it to the full 8Gb capacity to run Win10?

I bought a Dell with 10 on it but the updates are horrible conceived. there are long inexplicable pauses interruptions and no warning that they are trying to update. It is run for windows convenience not the users. I suspect that crashed my Windows 7 on my HP causing the motor to burn up. I am tending to believe that is why never seem to respond to inquiries.

seems a lot of people are doing a upgrade for the first time. thanks to the free upgrade. if they have done an upgrade before they would know that most of the issues they are having are caused by driver issues. honestly unless you know how to do driver fixes, i would not even bother upgrading to windows 10. i may not have good grammar but i am good with computers and doing upgrades. most drivers you will not be able to find unless its a desktop and you can replace parts in it. i also recently upgraded my moms computer i had to replace the graphics and sound card to make it work because there is no driver for it and it will not work in compatibility mode. if there is drivers only for xp or bellow then you are going to have to find another PC to install it on for the most part unless you have a destop and can replace that part. my moms computer was originally xp but i upgraded it to 8.1 and then 10 a lot of the drivers for 8.1 will work on 10 realy well. all i am trying to say is. as your computer gets older it will be harder and harder to find a upgrade for your pc so if your computer was originally xp and you it is a desktop you may have to replace a part if there is no driver beyond xp. apple products have allowed free upgrades to newer mac os x versions and apple os version a lot longer but apple will not let you upgrade your apple product after it has gotten so old not only because the drivers will not work also they want you to buy a newer apple or else you would have that product as long as you can and they would not make money. there are many more reasons for apple to do that but i am not going there. i kinda know all this because i play with and work on all types of computers and operating systems. i built a couple out of old computer cases. for example a commodore 64 and i change the motherboard to a Intel NUC and put windows 10 on it with 16 gb of ram 250 gb ssd 1 tb hard drive Intel wireless ac with Bluetooth 4.0 and make sure your computer has at least 4gb ram to run smoothly.

A Class Action Law Suit should be filed after Microsoft!!! How many Millions got screwed by using Windows 10…everyone that I have spoke to said it costs them Hundreds…out of their pocket to get their comp straightened out!!! My comp is 3 months old..Windows 10…and it’s nothing but problems. My McAfee would not fix the problems, and no matter what I did, nothing was any better! Had to take it to a tech, who said it was a Browser Problem…the Browser Internet Explorer..brought it back to where I bought it from..and was told the problem is in the software and Is NOT under warr! Damn,,the comp only 3. Months old I said..Fix It! t They said it would cost 300.00… I brought the comp to another tech that I have used in the past..but..it still costs 200.00!! Microsoft is responsible for all the Windows 10 Billshit..and should be held responsible for their screw up!!! A Class Action Law Suit Needs To Be Filed Against MICROSOFT for SCREWING OVER Everyone using Windows 10 CRAP!!!

I am sorry that it did not work out for you, but I have installed Win10 for all my family and no one had any complains. But the most disturbing thing in your comment was “My McAfee” part. If you use shitty things like McAfee or Norton or anything else that “fixes” computers, your computer probably just does not love you anymore and that is why it is not working.

I have upgraded an MSI all-in-one pc to Win10 and it gave me an error about the Intel graphics accelerator. When I Google’ed it came across a fix where you set something in Regedit. It worked and I was able to install Win10. All is fine except that now my touchscreen calibration is upside down and wrong way around. Touch top left and the cursor appears bottom right. And so on… Has anyone seen this? And if so does anyone maybe have a fix for me? I have tried the MSI calibration tool and the one that comes with Windows, but no luck.

after the update to 10, my programs take hours to open, initially they got progressively slower from taking a couple minutes, to 10 minutes, etc and now some do not even open. this is not to do with the programs themselves as it effects google chrome, photoshop, rhino 5 etc. has anybody experienced the same problem? or even better know how to fix it?

I have Windows 7 and it start to download Windows 10 which I never chose. I was given the option of let download or schedule a date. I clicked on schedule a date and fortunately “no date” for now was a choice.
Anyway after halting not authorized Windows 10 update, I went to Windows Update to see what was going on. Windows Update had Windows 10 Update which I never approved. I deselect the Windows 10 update box and exit the screen. Upon re entering the Windows Update screen the box was mysteriously checked again. The computer must of check the box for me.
I called Microsoft and they removed the Windows 10 option off the taskbar but the Windows Update still persisted. Upon further checking I found out upon right clicking Windows 10 update I was given a choice to hide the file. Windows 10 update disappeared and when I clicked on Windows update, Windows 10 update didn’t reappear.
Thanks Guys and Gals. I will not update to Windows 10 until it is much better debugged. Windows 7 forever!!!!

Well MS just did a hefty update to my Win 10 install. When it was done there were several nits like it being in airplane mode (WTH), and of course it put those crappy shortcuts arrows back. No problem. But the big gotcha is it deleted MSVCR110.DLL and without those my AVG products like Internet Security and PC Tune Up will not start. A google inquiry suggested that I download and install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4, but I am reluctant to toss some 4 year old files on top of this latest install that came through last night. I at least tried to find the find the file in the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 but with no luck. AVG suggest I contact MS, like that is even a real thing. I am pretty sure that AVG isn’t going to be the only vendor that got blasted out of the water. I’m just going to have to hope that some of these companies have enough heft with MS to get some kind of fix or work around published for this.

My dad has a 5 year old HP. Two days ago Windows 10 appeared. We want to switch back, but following the instructions of settings, restore Windows 7 nothing happens. We click restore and wait, no new blue window pops us to move forward on the restore. Any advice? We do not have the Win 7 disc, it was uploaded when he purchased computer. Any suggestions.

This is driving me crazy. I got the upgrade for my laptop from Win 8.1 Pro to Win 10 months ago, But when I’ve tried to do the upgrade directly from Microsoft for the desktop, I get a message saying that I can’t get the upgrade for my system from that site. I have the little windows icon on my tool bar that keeps saying that my upgrade is reserved and I must have patience.
I decided to download the upgrade directly from Microsoft and I found other MS downloading sites and downloaded these three files for the upgrade. They seem to be the same:
Getwindows10-pse_ggl.exe
Getwindows10-Web_Default_Attr.exe
Getwindows10-sds__________.exe
The .exe files download but when I tried to execute any of them, nothing happens. They are all the same size, but none of them respond when I click on it. I was logged in as Administrator and had disabled mi AV.
The only difference between my laptop and my desktop is that the latter has Win Pro 8.1 with Media Center (while my laptop never had it) and maybe MS has a different path for those installs with the MC, because my upgrade status says that I’ll get a notification when Win 10 is ready for my desktop.

I have finally upgraded to windows 10, but there are few things bothering me. Firstly, as I turn on my computer, it automatically logs into the guest profile without asking. It also asks to restart the pc everytime. Secondly, it also shows some sort of error every single time i switch on my computer. Could someone please tell me what went wrong while upgrading my windows…. :(
It would be a great help!

Some how W10 started to automatically install onto my laptop without my authorization. Ive been running W7 for years and it was factory installed onto my laptop when I bought it. When I saw that W10 was installing, I immediately hit the power button. When I rebooted, I now get all of these errors saying Windows 7 Build 7901 This copy of Windows is not genuine. I’ve scoured the internet for days, ran all the diagnostics, blah, blah, blah….but still get the error. When I try to verify if my W7 is genuine, it says it isn’t…..AND I KNOW IT IS. I’m so frustrated with this and can’t seem to find any answers.
Has anyone else had this problem and how can I fix it once and for all. Just want my W7 to run without all the error boxes popping up all the time.
I’ve posted this issue on all kinds of forums, but still have not received any answers. And of course, when you try to find support through Microsoft, they just send you all over the World.

I own my own computer services business in La Mesa.California and I have for the past 5 years been working exclusively with Windows based machines because my computer education obsession requires that I become a Windows expert before I even try to tackle other operating systems like Mac os x, linux, etc. One thing I have found is that Windows has some very peculiar behavioral characteristics. I liken the problem to a child with ADHD, OCS, and a myriad of other psychological problems. There are many suggestions for dealing with the problems but don’t forget the one that many parents found by accident: a good smack on the rear. I’m not advocating violence and especially not towards children I’m just making a point here. Having said that My point is that complicated and intricate things ,like kids and computers can sometimes have a simple fix. If you have a problem with your PC working fine after the 10 upgrade but suddenly you have a blank screen and the mouse is still moving then try this: Take a look at the num lock. If it is on take out the battery (be sure the adapter is plugged in) and then turn off the num lock. It should bring the screen back up as if it woke from a deep sleep and everything was loaded but not showing on the screen. Keep trying the little fixes that users post (if they worked for that user it should work for you) and when you get really frustrated just try this one easy fix-all: Take the laptop down to the river and practice your “Skipping stone” technique! Or learn the “Mexican Hat Dance” on it. More seriously, get a phone book and there should be a listing right at the beginning under “A” for “Apple”. Be warned, however that Mac is not without issues because you see these magical machines that make pictures ,movies, files and the like out of just zeros and ones are all subject to issues and breakdowns. Maybe it’s because they all run on electricity. The best laptop fix I ever found was when I unplugged it and painted a peaceful picture on the screen. It’s been perfect ever since and the screen never goes blank! Plus, I stopped biting my nails!

Caught out, after refusing upgrade to Windows 10 for months, pop up message changed to options for a scheduled date or input another date. Given I could revert back to windows 7 within 32 days, decided to go ahead. Now on day 4 with no ability to use laptop sony vaio ( yes now read it is incompatible). All I get us a blue screen welcome to windows 10, clicking on next just goes to a couple of blank screens then back to the intial screen, with its circle of dots indicating its working. So can not get to the task master or a safe mode boot or anywhere past this page. Read many blogs, tried the holding down the ESC , F8, Alt Ctl Del when turning it back on. Taking battery out etc. Been escalated to Tier 3 at Microsoft for their call tomorrow. Not hopeful from reading blogs they will help. So like so many others this is probably to cost me to get fixed. I have read a couple of posts from the same person on here, saying people like me should know more about computers if we own one and not to blame MS. But surely its MS who should be responsible andput some warnings on their pop ups re Windows re what we should check/do and have an obvious opt out button.surely they have had enough complaints, calls to their support centre since July 2015 to realize there is a problem.

After months of closing the windows 10 popup using the x in the corner rather than the now or later option, Microsoft upgraded my Win7 machine to Win10 overnight, with no warning and no EULA agreed. Within 1 week, the computer now fails to boot, cannot even get into the bios. Due to the age of the computer, I will be spending thousands on a new one rather than taking a couple of days to rebuild my beloved Win7 machine, recover and reinstall all of the programs etc.
I have complained to the toothless consumer protection watchpuppy, and received no reply.
Really pissed off at Microsoft for this little scam. Surely this sort of action is not legal if anyone was big enough to take these pricks to court. Will definitely be checking out Ubuntu.

I recently upgraded my Microsoft 640XL mobile from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. The new OS is in no sense a path-breaking one. It behave slower than the previous version. However, you can do a lot more in Win 10. It not a complete OS. Microsoft still has a lot of work to do. Availability of less number of apps is another issue. In short, I am not satisfied, although Microsoft is fixing up bugs every now and then.

Somehow Win10 Didn’t Install, I Guess.
I just now went through the Win8.1 to Win10 upgrade minuet. It took about 40 minutes. I was watching when it reached about 98% complete and went into another reboot. When it finished and returned to my desktop I checked Windows properties and it still says 8.1 — no messages, no errors, nothing, from this extended adventure. What the hell is going on?

I’m NOT sure how this reviewer Travis thinks that most love Windows 10 and that it is a good operating system; that is categorically NOT true! Window 10 is an ABSOLUTE nightmare plagued with issues!! I more than understand the system and I did NOT have the problems that I have with Windows 7 and before, or even Windows 8.1 pro. The only problems I have had, has been with Windows 10. There are FORCED updates, and you can’t choose like you used to be able when you know some didn’t work (like this newest one that screwed up my new computer) that make matters worse, its uses more ram resources than other versions, it does NOT play well with other programs, it has just as many crashes or more, even its own Microsoft program don’t always play well or even at all with Windows 10 (ie. READ the forums regarding Windows Outlook, OneNote, Word, Excel, and others……), there are double left over screens views and setups screens from previous windows versions mixed with windows 10 version, less flexibility with setting up custom colors and view within the desktop themes (48 CRAPPY COLOR choices and you can’t customize one of those ugly colors, like you used to be able to with every other OS before 10), even the synaptics pad doesn’t work properly, Cortana (don’t even want to get started with that piece of garbage) that you can’t delete or get rid of (useless feature for a desktop or laptop computer, great on a phone, but we are NOT talking about phone features), it (windows 10) NEVER seemed to be well beta tested, and I could easily go on and on.
Windows 7 was one of the MOST STABLE versions of windows they created along with Windows XP and even Windows 8.1 Pro was light years and way ahead of this POS Windows 10 operating system and yet I am stuck with it. I was even considered an Apple…….wow!! I figured how bad could it be, right?? It has been reviewed by so many “reviewers” and they said it was good…….really, did they all get paid off some ridiculous amount of money from Microsoft to say that stuff?? Even worse yet recently, Windows 10 forced an update overnight, WITHOUT my knowledge OR APPROVAL, and completely FUBAR’d my brand new laptop; it rendered several programs useless, I lost work, it deleted settings, and it brought back things that I deleted that were useless windows programs and apps that took up space on my hard drive. I DID NOT ask for the update, nor did I approve it and yet this POS OS 10 did what it wanted. Please let me know how in any world you think this is a good operating system and how it should function like this? REALLY!!??

Just installed the anniversary update on an Acer Aspire S7 (i7) Ultrabook+. This machine came with Win 8.1, I upgraded it to Win 8.1 Pro. I then upgraded it to Win 10 Pro. All versions have been stable. 10 Pro have been working fine for months.
Today, I started the Anniversary update. It went fine. I Went through all the steps and got to the ‘finalizing settings’ screen…then the screen went blank, but it keeps running. Let it sit for ~30Min still running and still blank. Power it off. Goes through the express settings, cortana, etc and gets to finalizing settings…screen goes blank. Repeat. Not sure what to do now.

Installed the Windows 10 Anniversary update on friday. Immediately started having wifi problems. It will connect and give internet access for 1-20 minutes, then no more internet. Computer thinks I am still connected to the wifi, but ‘no internet connection’. Disconnecting and trying to reconnect gives me ‘can’t connect to this network’. Rebooting allows connection again, until it fails. Again. Deleted and reinstalled wifi multiple times. Didn’t works. Diagnostics say its fine. Others can connect to library internet, as can my smart phone- it’s me, not them. Googled for fixes, tried them. Didn’t work. Saw recommendation to change DNS server from automatic to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.. Worked for an hour. Then didn’t. Started ITunes to get podcasts, lost connection. Rebooted, started ITunes again, lost connection again. Rebooted again. Switched to Grover Podcast. Lost connection. Rebooted.

Was forced to do the Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7. Finally got that working even though it killed most of my games even Microsoft games.
Now last night it automatically loaded the Anniversary update and the machine sucks even worse. I pauses in the middle of posting online and even now Microsoft Solitaire freezes in the middle of the deck.
Microsoft sucks and If I can I set up customer machines with Linux. It’s more stable anyway. It’s like being forced to buy a new car or house because the manufacturer forces you to get this intrusive crap. They are worse than the IRS.
