13 Common iPhone 6s Problems & How to Fix Them
We continue to hear about various iPhone 6s problems plaguing users as we make our way into the fall. If you’re dealing with an iPhone 6s problem on iOS 11 or below, take a look at this list of fixes before you take your device into an Apple Store.
In 2015, Apple released its iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The two devices replaced the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus as the company’s flagships. Its been a year since their release but they remain two of the best devices on the market.
We’ve been using the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus for well over a year now and they’re outstanding smartphones. That said, they’re far from perfect.
As we push deeper into the year, iPhone 6s owners are still reporting a number of different problems with the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus including a nasty unexpected shutdown issue.
While your first thought might be to make an appointment with an Apple Genius, there are a few things you can try at home before heading to an Apple Store.
Here, we take a look at common iPhone 6s problems and offer some fixes including one for the unexpected shutdown problem.
These fixes will work for both iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus and they should work for any version of iOS. This includes the new version of iOS, iOS 10.
(Note: You can Search your settings so if you can’t find something listed here in these fixes, try searching for it at the top of the Settings screen.)
How to Fix iPhone 6s Slide to Update Problem
Some iPhone 6s users have been running into a Slide to Update problem wherein the phone gets stuck on the “Slide to Update” screen. Obviously, that’s not ideal.
Fortunately, there are a few things that you can try if your iPhone 6s gets stuck on the Slide to Update screen during setup or during an iOS installation.
We’ve got stuck on this screen before and we were able to solve the issue by unplugging the device from iTunes and installing the update Over-the-Air.
If you see this issue during setup, try unplugging the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus from iTunes and trying again.
If a simple unplug doesn’t work out for you, Apple recommends restoring the phone from a backup, assuming you have one:
- Connect your iOS device to your computer and open iTunes.
- Select your device. If you don’t see it listed, force restart your device by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
- If you made an iTunes backup of your device before updating to iOS 9/iOS 10, restore your device from that backup. If not, you need to make a backup of your device in iTunes, then restore from that backup.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Touch Screen Problems
We’ve been dealing with some odd touch screen problems on the iPhone 6s. Our touch screen has stopped responding to gestures. And because it wasn’t responding to gestures, there was way to turn it off with the power button. It’s a problem that we ran into on the older iPhone 6 as well.
If your screen stops responding for whatever reason, don’t panic. There is a quick fix for the problem that should work for you.
You’ll want to hold down the home button and the power button until the phone resets itself. The iPhone 6s should turn back on within a few seconds and you’ll be asked to input your passcode if you have one. Your phone’s touch screen should be working and you’ll be able to access your apps and files again.
If it doesn’t work the first time, try again. One user we talked to had to reboot the phone three times before swipes and taps worked again.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Battery Life Problems
iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus battery life is solid for most users but some are dealing with abnormal battery drain out of the box and after updating to Apple’s iOS 10 update.
Mileage always varies when it comes to iPhone battery life but if you notice that your phone is draining battery faster than it should be, you’ll want to take a look at our list of fixes and tips to improve iPhone 6s battery life.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Photo Quality Problems
The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus feature excellent 12MP rear cameras. They’re two of the best smartphone cameras that we’ve ever used. That said, even the best have problems and iPhone 6s users are complaining about problems with image quality in low light.
Smartphone cameras always take better photos in well-lit environments. But if you’re noticing a dramatic drop in quality when you’re shooting in a noisy or poorly lit environment, try turning off the new Live Photos features that debuted on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s.
Users are saying that by turning Live Photos off, photos taken in low light have improved. They’re reportedly less grainy than photos shot with Live Photos turned on. As 9to5Mac notes, this is because the iPhone 6s is constantly recording at 12FPS to capture a Live Photo.
To shut Live Photos off, go into the Camera application and make sure the little sun-like logo in the center is white, not yellow. With Live Photos turned off, you could see an improvement to the quality of your shots in low-light.
If you want to shoot a Live Photo, simply toggle it back on.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Wi-Fi Problems
If your iPhone 6s suddenly stops connecting to your Wi-Fi network or starts exhibiting speeds that are slower than normal, there are a few things you’ll want to try.
If you start noticing Wi-Fi problems on the iPhone 6s, the first thing you’ll want to do is reset your Network Settings.
To do this, head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. The process can take a few minutes to complete so be patient. Once it’s done, your iPhone 6s will forget your Wi-Fi passwords so make sure you have them handy.
If that doesn’t work, you can try forgetting your Wi-Fi networks and reconnecting to them. To do that, Settings > Wi-Fi > Select your connection > Tap Forget this Network at the top of the screen. This has been known to jumpstart a poorly performing Wi-Fi connection on the iPhone.
If that doesn’t work, try restarting your router. Unplug it for a minute, plug it back in. You also might want to see if there is a firmware update available for your router. You’ll want to consult your router’s manual to find out how if you don’t know off the top of your head.
If none of those help, take a look at Apple’s list of fixes for Wi-Fi problems.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Lag
We’ve been noticing a bit of lag on the iPhone 6s Plus and it appears that other iPhone 6s users are seeing the same thing on iOS 10 and below.
If your lag doesn’t go away within two days of setting up the phone or installing a new iOS update, you’ll want to take action.
We’ve put together a list of potential solutions for iOS performance problems that you should look at before taking the phone in.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Bluetooth Problems
If your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus fails to pair to your Bluetooth device, there are a few fixes that could help you repair the connection.
First, reset your Network Settings. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Your device will forget your Bluetooth connections and you’ll now have to reconnect the phone to your various devices.
If that doesn’t help things, you’ll want to try forgetting the Bluetooth connection that’s causing problems. Go to Settings > Bluetooth > Select your connection using the circular blue i tab > Tap Forget this Device. Try pairing again.
If neither of those work, try resetting all of your settings. Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This process will take a few minutes and it won’t delete any of your data or files. That said, your settings will now be at factory defaults so you’ll need to spend some time setting things up again.
If you’re having iPhone 6s Bluetooth problems in the car, you’ll want to consult your cars manual and reset the connection.
First, forget the connection on your iPhone 6s. Next, reset Bluetooth in your car if you can. (If you can’t figure this out, you might have to bring it to a dealer.) Now, try and pair the iPhone 6s with the Bluetooth connection in your car.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Data Problems
If you are seeing problems with LTE or another data connection, you’ll want to investigate this list of fixes because they’ve been proven to work over the years.
First, try resetting the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. Hold down the power button, slide to turn off, turn it back on using the power button.
If a restart doesn’t fix things, try toggling Cellular Data off and on in your device’s Settings. To do that go into Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > Toggle Off. After you toggle it off, toggle it back on and see if that helps.
You will also want to try toggling Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds or so to see if that helps restore your data. Airplane Mode is located at the top of your settings.
You can also try shutting off LTE for a few minutes to see if that works. To shut it down, go into Settings > Cellular > Enable LTE > Off. Turn it back on after a minute.
If nothing here alleviates the problem, you’ll want to check social media and the news for potential outages.
If you’re certain that there isn’t an outage, you’ll want to get in contact with your carrier or Apple customer support.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Random Reboots
If your iPhone 6s gets stuck in an random reboot loop, there’s a quick fix that should work.
After downloading one of the last iOS 9 updates we noticed an uptick in random reboots. The device shuts down on its own, shows the Apple logo, goes to the lock screen, and then reboots again. It’s seemingly endless and it’s extremely frustrating.
To get out of the loop we simply hold down the home button and the power button at the same time. The device will show the Apple logo and restart.
This is a temporary fix. If the random reboots continue, you might want to consider bringing it into an Apple Store. You might also need to replace your phone.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Unexpected Shutdown Issues
If your phone suddenly shuts down on you, you might need to replace its battery.
Apple’s “determined that a very small number of iPhone 6s devices may unexpectedly shut down.” This isn’t a safety issue and it only affects a handful of devices with specific serial numbers.
If you’ve experienced this issue on your iPhone 6s, you’ll want to check the serial number to see if your device is eligible for a free replacement. You can check your serial number of Apple’s website. If you’re eligible, you’ll need to choose a service option.
There is another unexpected shutdown issue plaguing the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. It’s similar to the aforementioned problems but they aren’t the same.
Apple says that its iOS 10.2.1 update has curbed unexpected shutdowns on the iPhone 6s by whopping 80 percent. So if your screen suddenly goes black on occasion, you’ll want to install the iOS 10.2.1 update.
The company also says that its added the ability for the iPhone 6s to restart without needing to connect to power if the unexpected shutdown still occurs.
A fix for the iPhone 6s Plus should be on the iOS 10.3 update.
How to Fix iPhone 6s App Problems
Tons of iPhone 6s users are running into problems with app updates, apps, and the App Store. If you see problems with apps or the App Store, here’s what you need to do.
If app updates aren’t downloading on your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, try restarting your device with a hard reset. Hold down the power button and home button for 10 seconds and wait for the phone to reboot. Try downloading again.
If that doesn’t work, rapidly tap “Update” on an app before the “Open” symbol appears next to the app on the App Store. If that doesn’t work, wait a few hours and then try again. We’ve heard that problems have simply gone away after a few hours.
If you notice that an app’s performance is struggling, you’ll want to check to see if there is a new bug fix update available. Developers are still rolling out support for iOS 10 and they’ll always be rolling out bug fixers. Install the update if reviews are good.
If an update doesn’t work, try reinstalling the app. And if that doesn’t work, contact the developer to see if it has a fix.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Sound Problems
A new iPhone 6s sound problem limits the volume of the iPhone speaker and can stop notification sounds until you get an iMessage.
If you run into this problem on your iPhone 6s you can restart the iPhone to get your volume back, but the culprit appears to be the Facebook app.
If you don’t want to restart, double tap on your home button and close the Facebook app. Alternately you can turn off background app refresh for the Facebook app.
Go to Settings -> General Background App Refresh -> Facebook -> Off.
How to Fix iPhone 6s 3D Touch Problems
The iPhone 6s comes with a new feature called 3D Touch that allows you to make a hard press to open up new menu functions. Some people are complaining that 3D Touch pops up too fast and some are saying that they are having problems getting it to pop up at all.
If you’re having issues, try adjusting the sensitivity. To do that, head into Settings > General > Accessibility > scroll down to 3D Touch and tap. The default is medium but you can switch it to firm or light. You can test the sensitivity at the bottom.
We also should point out that a lot of apps don’t come with support for 3D Touch. Not yet at least. So if your favorite app isn’t responding, it’s not because your iPhone 6s is broken, it’s probably because it lacks support.
How to Fix iPhone 6s Problems If Nothing Else Works
If you’ve run into an iPhone 6s problem that’s not listed here, you’ll want to head to Apple’s discussion forums and look around. You might also want to poke around on social media for complaints and potential fixes.
If you can’t find a fix that works for you, you can try downgrading to an older version of iOS or you can restore from a backup/factory reset your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus.
To restore from a backup:
- Plug in and backup to the computer or to iCloud.
- Turn off Find My iPhone – Settings -> iCloud -> Find my iPhone -> Off.
- In iTunes Click Restore.
- Follow the prompts and the iPhone will reinstall iOS 9/iOS 10 from scratch.
- When it completes click Restore from Backup to put your information back on the iPhone or Choose to set up as a new iPhone.
- Choosing to set up as a new iPhone will erase your files and data so please be careful.
If none of that works, make an appointment and see a Genius at the Apple Store.
Install iOS 12.5.6 for Better Security

If you want the details, head over to Apple's website. If you missed the iOS 12.5.5 update, it brought three security patches to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You can learn more about the trio on Apple's security site. If you missed iOS 12.5.4, you'll get that update's important security upgrades with your iOS 12.5.6 update. If you're interested in the particulars, head on over to Apple's website for more. If you skipped iOS 12.5.3, you'll get its security patches with your upgrade. Both of its patches were related to WebKit. If you want to learn more about them, head on over to Apple's security site. If you skipped iOS 12.5.2, you'll also get its security patch with your upgrade. You can read more about it over on Apple's website. If you also skipped iOS 12.5, you'll also get its patch with your upgrade. Apple's outlined the update's patch in detail on its security site. If you missed iOS 12.4.9, you'll also get its four security patches with your upgrade. You can read more about those right here. If you skipped iOS 12.4.7, you also get the update's three security patches (two for the Mail app and one for Wi-Fi) with your upgrade to iOS 12.5.6. If you're running software that's older than Apple's iOS 12.4.4 update, you'll want to download iOS 12.5.6 in the near future because it brings iOS 12.4.4's security patch to your device. You can read about it right here. If you're running software older than iOS 12.4.2, you'll get an its patch with your upgrade. You can read about the security contents of iOS 12.4.2 right here. If you're on software that's older than iOS 12.4.1, you'll get iOS 12.4.1's security patch with your iOS 12.5.6 update. You can read about that patch right here. If you're on software that's older than iOS 12.4, you get iOS 12.4's patches with your iOS 12.5.6 update. iOS 12.4 brought 19 security patches to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. If you're interested in the specifics, you can read about them on Apple's security site. If you're running software older than iOS 12.3, your iOS 12.5.6 update carries iOS 12.3's security patches on board. The iOS 12.3 update brought 23 patches and you can read about all of them right here on Apple's site. If you're on software that's older than iOS 12.2, you'll get iOS 12.2's security patches with your version of iOS 12.5.6. iOS 12.2 brought a whopping 41 security patches to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. You can read more about the iOS 12.2's patches over on the company's website. It's important to note that Apple's iOS 12.2 update patched up an exploit that allowed websites to use motion sensors to "fingerprint" devices. The exploit, discovered by researchers in Europe, uses JavaScript to snag data from a device's accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer when the user visits an infected website. If the attack is successful, a device can be tracked around the internet. Fortunately, Apple's patched up the issue. If you skipped it, you'll probably want to move to iOS 12.5.6 soon. If you're on software older than iOS 12.1.4, you get four important security patches including fixes for a widespread FaceTime eavesdropping bug that lets you call someone via FaceTime and hear the audio coming from their phone before they pick up the phone. If you're on software older than iOS 12.1.3, you get some additional patches with your version of iOS 12.5.6. Again, they're baked into your upgrade. Apple lists a grand total of 23 patches on board iOS 12.1.3 and you can read about all of them over on Apple's website. If you're on software older than iOS 12.1.1, you should install the iOS 12.5.6 update on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch today. The iOS 12.1.1 update brought 17 patches for potential security exploits. They'll will help protect your phone. You can read about them here. If you're running software older than iOS 12.1, you'll get 24 patches from that update with your version of iOS 12.5.5. If you're on software that's older than iOS 12.0.1, your iOS 12.5.6 update brings two additional patches. Both patches are for potential lock screen exploits. Long story long, if you store sensitive data on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you have some really good reasons to upgrade to iOS 12.5.6 today.

Great article!!! Saved me from having to take my phone to the store. In this case, I woke up around 4AM to find that my phone’s screen was dark and unresponsive. My first thought was a dead battery. After charging for about 20 minutes I still couldn’t get the phone to power up. I was starting to panic, but found your article. I had completely forgotten about the Home/Power button combination. Fixed! Not sure of the initial issue that caused it though.

My touch screen wouldn’t respond to my gestures, I was trying to drain my battery in order for my phone to restart, I just hate going to the store. If that wouldn’t have helped then I would have no choice. Anyway, after reading your article I also too forgot about the home/power button combo. It worked for me ! Thanks, great article.

Here’s a problem I have not seen noted: I have a 6S Plus, and if I access the camera, my music shuts off. This only happened in the past if I tried to take a video. This happens whether “live” photo is turned on or turned off. I cannot listen and take photos at the same time. This is a deal-breaker for me and I will return my phone if a solution cannot be found.

While I appreciate all these websites (like this one) addressing these issues, but let’s be clear: Resetting everything every time something goes wrong, is NOT a fix. I don’t want to turn my phone off and on several times a day. I’m waiting for apple to acknowledge and resolve these bugs!

Worst phone I have ever owned. It spoiled my birthday this year as I bought it as a birthday present. I have had countless problems with it, from not being able to sent a txt with having to delete history in email and txt, to sound problems, speaker not working, muffled sound when using the phone for a simple call, and it often freezes when dialling out, ( had an emergency and couldn’t use the phone because it just wouldn’t dial out ). As for the camera on it, that was one of the reasons I bought the phone, to improve on the iPhone 4’s much needed camera. Well to my shock and horror photo quality is terrible. I lost track of the number of times I rang support and the number of times I went into the store to fix the problems. Clearly I’ve been sold a dodgy iPhone from the iPhone store at Southland. I wouldn’t never buy from them again.

Oh my goodness – Thank you so, so much. I awoke this morning to find my iPhone 6s completely black although I was still receiving message alerts and Siri was still responsive. I knew that I hadn’t dropped my phone so I was panicking because it wasn’t turning on. Thankfully I found your page! Keep up the good work.

The first time you use your iPhone with a Bluetooth headset, you need to sync the devices using a process called “Pairing.”

Why would you not have offered long ago to save txts in iCloud?
Some of the most treasured cherished from beloved in my life along with important information from Drs etc. Before I took photos and emailed to myself my heart aches they are lost. Also most beautiful cherished photos.
That should have been done day one!
Shazam use to be such a pleasure and fun I’ve had for years. Today the app was missing from the home screen and all my song gone other than today’s.
They offered a 3 month trial for something with no mention of the cost or a place to cancel which they then say can be canceled at anytime.
They never responded as I asked it be canceled and a confirmation email.
Their prices are insane.. they should consider ads for pmt and not try burdening and tormenting us.. I’m presently trusting a far better company that is as Shazam use to be. I.
can’t even find the lyrics.
I would rather pay a small one time pmt for a song ( as .25, .50 or max .99 $ that’s forever mine. Which I would greatly limit!
And definitely won’t pay their outrageous deceptive monthly charges!
Far preferable get silent ads at the bottom out of the way .. they work
and have it pleasureable and fun again!
Believe me it wont be my first impulse to catch a song again until that’s remedied and made userfriendly again!
I’ll be contacting Apple tomorrow to make sure nothing has been charged and cancel my payment info for a new one issued!

Since I started using my iPhone 6 plus, my coverage area is not as good. With Verizon I could get coverage just about anywhere. Now, when I go to remote areas, I have no coverage at all.
What is going on? Should I go back to my old android phone?
