iPhone 6 iOS 10.1.1 Update: 9 Things to Know in December
Its been five weeks since Apple replaced iOS 10.1 with iOS 10.1.1. With that in mind, we want to take a look at the most important things you need to know about the iPhone 6 iOS 10.1.1 update as we push into December.
In September, Apple confirmed an iOS 10 release date for the iPhone 6 and its other iOS 9 powered devices and on September 13th the company pushed the iOS 10 update to iPhone 6 models around the globe.
iOS 10 delivered new features and enhancements but it also brought problems to the iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and other popular mobile devices.
In an effort to clean up iOS 10, the company’s released several bug fix updates for the iPhone 6 and its other iOS 10-powered devices.
The latest is iOS 10.1.1, a small update that brings a key fix to the former flagship smartphone.
The iPhone 6 iOS 10.1.1 update is a tiny update if you’re coming directly from iOS 10.1. If you’re coming to iOS 10.1.1 from iOS 9 or iOS 8, it’ll be much larger due to iOS 10.1 and iOS 10. The features from Apple’s previous iOS 10 updates are baked into iOS 10.1.1.
With the smoke from the iOS 10.1.1 release settled we want to take a look at the most important things iPhone 6 owners need to know about the iOS 10.1.1 update at the five week mark.
This roundup offers a quick iPhone 6 iOS 10.1.1 review, details about the iOS 10 downgrade, a look at some of the problems plaguing the iPhone 6 after iOS 10.1.1, and a whole lot more.
Check back for regular updates as we make our way into December.
iPhone 6 iOS 10.1.1 Update Review
We've been using the iPhone 6 iOS 10.1.1 update for a little more than five weeks and we've been keeping a close eye on key areas like battery life, connectivity, and UI speed. Here's what we've found during our time with the current version of iOS 10. We haven't noticed any major problems with iPhone 6 battery life with the iOS 10.1.1 update on board. The device continues to hold an excellent charge at the five week mark. If you recently installed iOS 10.1.1 on your iPhone 6 and you're seeing battery drain issues give it a couple of days to settle in. If it fails to settle after a couple of days with iOS 10.1.1 installed, you'll want to try some manual fixes for battery life problems. We've tested the phone and its update with several ISPs, routers, and Bluetooth devices and we're still having an excellent experience. We haven't noticed any major problems or dropped connections. AT&T LTE/4G continues to perform at a high level as well. The iPhone 6 is still extremely fast with iOS 10.1.1 on board. Animations and transitions are incredibly fluid and we haven't experienced any lag in problem areas like Control Center and the Notifications tray. The iOS 10.1.1 update is treating our iPhone 6 well at the one month milestone. We recommend it for most iOS 10 users. That said, you'll want to seek out a second or third opinion before you make your move. This is especially important if you're coming from iOS 9.3.5 or below. You can't go back to iOS 9 once you make the move to iOS 10.

A problem I just ran into with iOS 10.0.1 and iTunes 12.5.1 is that after updating, most of my Smart Playlists on my iPhone 6s (and iPad Pro) were empty! Some I was able to update by manually synching each of them, but that is both a pain and doesn’t fix all of them. All music is there, it is just the playlists. Apple’s boards (https://discussions.apple.com/message/30648079) have more on the issue. Curent Apple-recommended workaround is to stop synch of all music in iTunes (apply – deletes everything) then turn it back on (apply – must re-copy all of your music and playlists). UGLY!

I just installed it last night and it took forever! Now I see why. However, the biggest issue is the battery drain is insane! I have it ON the charger and it’s not charging or charging really really slow. And if you actually use it, forget it. I’ll give it a couple more days to see if it settles as you say, otherwise how can I remove it?

I have iPhone 6 and upgraded from IOS 9.3 to 10.0.2 and I see the same type of batter drainage. I had my phone on charge over night and only using it to play a few games and just a message here of there and about about 4 hours the batter is down to 55%.

I have the iPhoe 6s for my home use and iPhone 6 for work. I updated both phones, to iOS 10, at the same time. Connected to my home wifi, both phones took about the same amount of time to update. Actually, the 6 updated slightly faster than the 6s. Both phones function perfectly fine and barely notice any difference in speed, battery life or apps. I guess i was just one of the lucky ones.

Same here. I just upgraded from 5s to 6s+……..
Love it. 6s+ took the update like a champ in like 3 minutes. I love it. All the new features are exciting to find. I actually found one by accident. Somehow it asked me if I wanted to make a sound effect when I was doing a text and I don’t remember how I did it or if it was in messenger or text but I will find it.

I hate the update, it makes my phone a lot harder to use and is not a bit user friendly in the professional world. all the goofy symbols and emoji s attached to the text message screen are stupid and will not go away. Can no longer copy messages to forward to someone. The camera is all messed up. I want it removed from my phone. Battery life is affected. How do I get rid of this update
Lisa Binns
10/01/2016 at 10:41 pm
Mary Lynn. I found that if you ‘hold’ your finger on the message that you wish to copy, it will bring up the ‘Copy and More …’ option at the bottom of the screen.
If you do the quick two tap as in the older version, you get the stupid symbol things – I have no idea why Apple thought these were a good idea to introduce.

I have never in the years of owning an Iphone have been so dissapointed with THIS upgrade. Amazing that at a time when smart phones are so competitive, Apple would destroy the chance of me renewing my contract with them. Steve Jobs is turning in his grave bless him, for what took him years to develop, you have taken a 5 minute download to destroy.

I did the update today to 10.0 .2 it only took about five minutes. So far it’s just been a little bit of an adjustment with the differences. The only issue I’m having is the music. Some of Mom songs are cutting off when it goes to the next one . Otherwise it looks pretty good. I purchased the app down seven today but it won’t be in for about a month. I think this update will just get me prepared for the seven.

anyone else having issues with receiving and making Facetime calls? I try to answer and it just says connecting and then shows a missed FT call. I really Hate this update and sat on the phone with Apple support this morning, just to argue with the tech that says “well your phone looks like its working from our end”. Oh great yet its not working on my end, cant even turn on call waiting, and battery life drains fast. All this in less then 24 hours of an update……

I really dislike all the little cute things going on with the text feature. I am a grown-up and don’t want this stuff. Also, I have an app to access my work e-mail but do not want to get notifications on my phone. Now, with the update I not only get notifications, but I ONLY get them on my phone. When I go to my computer, they are not there. Not sure how to fix this but I need to save stuff from my phone to computer and can’t. How can I uninstall?

The “it just works” iPhone is no longer. The latest update 10.0.2 has essentially made my iPhone 6 useless. It locks up all of the time and requires hard reboots (not just power cycling). From simply unlocking the device to typing a text message, requires at least power cycling to unfreeze up to and including hard reboots. The first day I had iOS 10.0.2, I had to cycle the power more than a dozen times and hard reboot it 8 times (yes I counted and kept track) – ANNOYING! Since that first day, my hard reboots are down to 3-4 times and power cycling remains more than a dozen times per day, but that’s because I have stopped using my phone as much, resorting to the iPad for communicating. Oh, I even used the “Reset All Settings” under General settings, but that didn’t work either. The next update can’t come soon enough. But will it work?

There is a work around to bulk delete emails in mail on iOS 10.0.2
Click on your inbox
Click on edit
Select the radio check mark for the first email (lift finger after selecting)
Bottom of the screen put finger on move (do not lift this finger yet)
With the other hand uncheck the first email (keeping move pressed)
Lift finger from move
You then get a move option for all emails in the inbox – move to bin
Bin can then be bulk emptied
I used this method to bulk delete several thousand emails last night
Wish I knew how to stop the insane ios10 battery drain on my iPhone 6 though – I’ve hard reset, disabled or turned off pretty much everything, location services, background refreshes, iCloud, Siri, raise to wake, keychain, etc etc :(

Terrible update. When I click on a voicemail, it plays perhaps a couple of seconds then stops and goes back to just showing the voicemail. Some apps won’t open. Other apps will sullenly close and go back to main screen. The touch security open is now two steps instead of one. Notification screens are ridiculously large. All in all, I’d like to go back to the previous version, where I had no problems.

Looks like Apple used the 10.0.3 upgrade to force I Phone 6 owners to purchase 7’s. class action suit!! I spent 2 days with support trying to fix my iPhone 6. They wanted to charge me to fix the phone I threaten a lawsuit and they will fix it for free in the meantime I had to buy an iPhone 7 to continue my professional work. The Apple Support folks suggested I wipe the phone completely and start over after 90 minutes on the phone with them (a land line of course). While on the phone with them looking at settings and sending diagnostics, the battery dropped from 92% to 27% and then while I waited for them to consult with a colleague it went down to 16%. After a network reset the visible drain slowed. They suggested there was a “genius” at the local store that might be able to do more. The phone lasted less that 5 hours the next day! I was in the habit of charging it every two or three days, now I have to carry a charger with me and check periodically to see if I have enough juice left to show the bus driver my electronic ticket.

I have an iPhone and like some of you I usually wait to do the updates because my phone is working just fine..why fix something that’s not broken! My husband had me do the iOS 10 update, which was fine..no problems at all, but then instead of waiting like I normally do I just went ahead and did the iOS 10.0.2 update this afternoon. Needless to say I have never been more aggravated! I have had nothing but problems since doing the upgrade. My battery life is gone quicker than it ever has, takes forever to load anything (emails,Facebook, internet etc), takes me on and off my wifi connection and actually adds data to my plan but the worst problem is my phone is now lagging and it is driving me nuts! How do I go back to ios 10?! Ugh, so upset that I did the update..absolutely awful!

When I installed iOS 10 on my iPhone 6 Plus, it took15 hours for full charge. Whereas with iOS 9.x it took me only 90 minutes. I wonder if iOS 10 has modified the charging algorithm to suit the iPhone 7 charger. I would want Apple to test the charging time of iPhone 6 plus with iOS 10 using the iPhone 6 plus charger.

Tired of the childish bullshit. II do not need Siri to suggest Apps for me. I just want immediate access to my home page. I don’t need special effects, suggested emogies or images when I send messages. Why can’t they have left messaging simple. I want to be able to copy and paste text from a pdf attachment in an email to a text message and now that is not possible. That has been possible for years and now it isin’t. This new operating system is not for those of us that use our phone as a tool instead of as a toy. I am going to figure out how to revert to an older version of operating system and if this is the way of the future with Apple, I will leave them.

This upgrade has totally ruined a hitherto perfect phone. So many issues, messages I do not need, n obility t osnapsbot a web page, alarm malfunctinos which si really annoying, slow. It just feels like the phone is trying take over my life – constantyl popping up messages and info I d onot need. Seem totally aimed at the gaming, social media world and thus my iPhone6 is bo longer a useful business tool.

I am having a rather disturbing problem with email since the upgrade. It appears this latest upgrade thinks it is perfectly ok to randomly remove read emails from the IN box to TRASH. Then it removes from TRASH. I had flight info that I needed and …gone!

Only issue I’ve had is importing photos to iPhoto on my old macbook pro, otherwise I don’t know what everyone is whining about?? More a case of EEOC me thinks…

While my problems with the update are still substantial, I don’t have nearly the problems that others are having. I’d never be so arrogant to suggest that because I’m not experiencing what they are, that their problems are any less legitimate.

10.0.2 sux, its just filled my phone with stuff I didn’t need, made it harder to use not easier, and draining my battery. Honestly Apple you’re just losing customers with this effort, work out a way for us to go back to the version that was working fine. NOW!

10.0.2 is horrible! All my latest messages show up on the screen before logging in on my I-Pad. When I click on a link, it takes me to my bookmarks instead of the link. I always have to try a link twice to get to it. It has also screwed up my mail. Now, new messages in my mail are at the bottom of a conversation instead of at the top. Sometimes they are in the middle. How can I get rid of this upgrade??

Excellent update, takes a while to get used to it like many of the updates of the past, love the features in iMessage. No problem with battery, perhaps some of the ones who are should look at a few of their settings, many apps, not Apple, work away in the background eating away at your battery.
The only issue I have is with the changes to Maps, Apple had the better of google maps for user friendly interface and visibility, they have lost that edge.
Roll on my purchase of an iPhone 7 get get the best from the latest update.

Worst update, I am unable to receive picture messages from non IPhone users. I will be going to the Samsung Galaxy Edge. I decided to give IPhone another chance and like last time it was disappointing.

Using a 6s. Instead of iOS it now operates like pOS As with some others, I don’t game, little tô (where did that come from) no music. Just a dullard trying to do my business.
When typing emails, when deleting more than 5 or 6 characters the screen freezes and the up arrow turns black. Nothing works to make it unfreeze. Must power down for a minute or so. If I power on too soon, frozen screen comes back up.
Phoning a challenging experience. Kind of like a slot machine. Sometimes works fine. When asking Siri to dial a number, often get garbage on the screen, sometimes nothing happens. When bringing up Siri, sometime get a chime when it comes up but doesn’t respond to voice or keys. Hit favorites, press on favorite name and it looks at me. Most times I have to power off. Extremely disappointed. Sometimes phone Bluetooth works, many times not. Apple ain’t what it used to be. Used to swear by them, not at them.

Ditto, ditto, ditto! Can barely make any calls or texts due to freezing up. Also, this is so BIZZARE! My phone can be sitting aside and it just randomly starts dialing someone! And it the middle of the night an AD for Dr. Oz came on blaring while I was asleep-scared me to death!
Also, when I press a button on the home screen a totally different screen pops up than I was selecting-UGH!!!!!!!!!

The update is fine, but why did you change feature functionality? The alarm interaction are a mess now ! Can’t swipe to cancel alerts have to hold my finger to the screen to shut it down. I use my phone as a daily alarm to wake me and it a pain trying to push that screen after sleeping 😤 Give me back my swipe functionality!

it is absolutely the worst, My IPhone 6 will not scroll properly, Vmails do not play properly, text message do not open correctly, address book does not open correctly. You name it and it does not do it like it used to. Forbes had it right “Biz slow and people are not buying phones like they used to.” So send out this system screw up old ones to force you to buy new phone. Time to go to new to different brand sorry to say.

I downloaded 10.1.1 a few weeks ago hoping some of the 10 problems had been fixed. My phone has slowed to a crawl on some items: e.g. Moving emails to trash. Trying to delete trash n junk takes forever. My tower power overall is reduced n it’s not a tower problem. My photos r all screwed up-can’t find anything now. Why can’t I downgrade to 9? I’ve advised all my friends who were waiting to not download any 10 version.

I’ve started monitoring the health app on the iPhone6 – I used to like the feel of the old app in the pre-10.1.1 OS. What I’ve noticed is the “floors” climbed counter is far less accurate than real-world or other devices. I also wear a fitbit for comparison and the fitbit gets it right. Steps are fine on health but not floors.
Each day, twice a day, at work, I walk up 5 full floors. There are 24 8-inch steps between each floor (14 steps between landings). It counts the steps just fine, but not the floors. The Fitbit counts 9 floors. The iPhone varies, sometimes 3, sometimes 4, sometimes 1. Its always in the same place – my right hip pocket. The same iPhone also frequently counts over 20+ floors (27 last Saturday) during the late evenings – 11pm, 12am. When I’m sound asleep at home. In a single level no-basement ranch-style house. At 550 ft MSL.
So why is this app so bad? It is not consistent, even when it’s bad, which makes it worse. And don’t tell me I need a new phone – it was far more accurate with the pre-10.1 iOS running.
