10 Common Nexus Android 6.0 Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

The Marshmallow update brings tons of new features and enhancements to Nexus users but it also brings some problems with it. With these and future issues in mind, we want to show you how to fix the most common Nexus Android 6.0 and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow problems.

In September, Google confirmed the update’s name (Android 6.0 Marshmallow) and its release date for Nexus smartphones and tablets (October 5th). In October, Google started rolling out the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update.

In December, Google replaced the Android 6.0 update with an Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update. Android 6.0.1 is the first major upgrade to Marshmallow and it brings new features and bug fixes to Nexus devices.

Android6-marshmallow-L

We’ve heard (and seen) a lot of good things about Android 6.0 and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and we’ve also heard about some of their problems. Google’s testing wiped out many issues but it appears that some Nexus Marshmallow problems slipped through the cracks.

With no Android 6.0.2 release date in sight, Nexus owners need help. And we want to do our best to help you if you’re seeing a problem after installing the Marshmallow update on your Nexus phone or tablet.

This list of common Nexus Android 6.0 and Android 6.0.1 problems comes with some fixes that have been passed down over the years. All of them are proven fixes and there’s a good chance that you’ll find the fix that you’ve been looking for here.

How to Fix Marshmallow Installation Problems

Google’s latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OTA roll out (February security update) is moving slowly but that’s not a problem. That’s by design. If you’re unable to install the update, manually or Over-the-Air, that’s a problem. And a common one at that.

If you’re having trouble sideloading the software on your Nexus phone or tablet, take a look at our in-depth guide. It will take you through the process and show you how to install the software without any trouble.

There are a few things you can try if your Android 6.0 or Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow installation gets stuck during the download or the installation.

Nexus9-13

One thing that’s worked for us is to let the device’s battery die, recharge it to 100%, and then try the update again. If that doesn’t work, you can try clearing your device’s cache partition to try and jumpstart the installation. Here is how to do that:

  • Press and hold Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until you see something other than Google on the screen.
  • At this point, you should see a large arrow at the top of the screen.
  • Tap Volume Down repeatedly until you see Recovery in the arrow.  Then tap the Power button.
  • You should see an android on his back with its chest open showing red triangle and exclamation mark.
  • While holding the Power button, tap Volume Up once then release the Power button.
  • You should now see a list of items at top of screen.
  • Tap Volume Down until the item to erase or wipe the cache partition is highlighted.  Then tap Power button to initiate the process.
  • A status messages will appear at the bottom of the screen.  Be patient because this can take 10-15 minutes to complete.  When done restart the Nexus.

If none of that works, and you can’t find a fix anywhere else, you might want to factory reset your device. Obviously, that’s not ideal but it’s an option if you can’t dislodge the problem.

How to Fix Marshmallow Battery Life Problems

Battery life issues are extremely common after major Android updates so it hasn’t been surprising to see Nexus users complain about abnormal battery drain this week. Nexus Android 6.0.1 battery issues are isolated but we could see the number of complaints grow as the OTAs pick up speed.

Nexus6-81-620x412

If your Android 6.0 or Android 6.0.1 battery life isn’t what you think it should be after installing Google’s new operating system, you’ll first want to wait a couple of days for the software to settle. Battery life can take a few days to settle down. Wait two days. If nothing changes, it’s time to take action.

We’ve put together a guide that will take you through some steps to take if you notice something wrong with your Nexus’ battery. Take a look at that before you factory reset your phone or try and get a new device from Google.

How to Fix Marshmallow Charging Problems

For one reason or another, charging problems always seem to plague Nexus users after new Android updates. Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow is no different and we expect to see more charging issues emerge in the days, weeks and months to come. Fortunately, there are some potential fixes for these Android 6.0 Marshmallow charging problems.

First try this. If you can, charge your Nexus up to 100%. Once it’s there (this could take awhile), let the charge start to fall. Before it gets down to 0%, right around the 5% mark, charge it up to 100% again. Repeat this three to four times and it could return to normal.

If that doesn’t work, and it may not, there are a few other possible remedies to try. Make sure that the Nexus is being charged with the cable that it came with. If you’re using the original charger, and it still doesn’t work, try using another charger with the same voltage rating as the one that came with your device.

You can also try swapping out the wall charger for a USB cable. Plug your Nexus device into a computer and charge it that way to see if it helps.

Google’s fixes in the video above might work as well. Take a look at them because they include one quick fix that might jumpstart your phone or tablet.

How to Fix Marshmallow Wi-Fi Problems

We’re already seeing Nexus Android 6.0.1 Wi-Fi problems emerge. Nexus 5 users, in particular, are complaining about broken Wi-Fi though we’ll almost certainly see Wi-Fi issues impact all Marshmallow devices.

Let’s start with some basic fixes for Android Marshmallow Wi-Fi issues. If you run into problems, try restarting your router. Leave it off for a good minute and then plug it back in. Reconnect your Nexus to the device and see if the connection has recovered.

If that doesn’t work, make sure your router’s firmware is up to date. The update for each router is going to be a little different so consult your manual or check online for instructions. Once you update, try connecting again.

Nexus-7-1

If that doesn’t work, it’s time to head into your phone or tablet. First, try forgetting your Wi-Fi connection. Go into your Wi-Fi settings, either in the Settings menu or via the Quick Settings drop down, and select the connection. Choose Forget and then reconnect.

You can also try changing the frequency. To do that, click the vertical dots in the top right corner to bring up the Advanced menu. Go to Wi-Fi frequency band and test the different options. It should be set to Automatic by default.

If none of these fixes squash your Android 6.0 or Android 6.0.1 Wi-Fi problems, we recommend updating your applications. If that doesn’t help, boot your device into Safe Mode to try and single out problem apps. Apps have been known to cause issues with connectivity.

How to Fix Marshmallow Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth problems are also extremely common after Android updates and we’re starting to see Nexus users complain about Android Marshmallow Bluetooth problems. These can be a little tricky to fix due to the number of third-party Bluetooth devices out there but here are some fixes for the most common issues.

First, try flipping it off then back on again. If that doesn’t jumpstart your connection, you can try forgetting the connection to see if that helps. Head into your Bluetooth connections in Settings, select the one causing you problems, and then select Forget. Reconnect and see if that helps. This has worked for us with speakers, headphones and watches in the past.

If you’re having problems with Bluetooth in your car, you’ll want to try and reset its Bluetooth connection if you can. Consult the car’s manual or take it into a dealer if you can’t figure it out on your own. Reset it, forget the connection on your device and then try to connect again.

If forgetting your connections fails to solve the issue, you will want to try booting into Safe Mode. Again, to do this, follow Google’s instructions. Safe Mode will disable third-party apps and help you track down culprits.

You can also try wiping the cache partition (instructions above) or factory resetting the phone or tablet to see if that corrects the issue.

How to Fix Marshmallow Data Problems

Some Nexus users are saying that Android Marshmallow fixed their data issues but others are saying that Android 6.0 is causing issues with cellular data. Issues with these connections are common right after a major update but they can be tricky to fix.

If you’re confident that these issues don’t have anything to do with an outage at Google or your service provider, you’ll want to restart your Nexus device. Power it down and reboot it. This has worked for some Nexus users in the past.

Nexus-6-8

We’ve also had success putting our device into Airplane Mode. Switch on Airplane Mode and then switch it off. Airplane Mode will kill of your connections. Once you turn it off, your connections will be restored.

If that doesn’t work, and you’re positive that should be getting service, you should try and contact your service provider.

How to Fix Marshmallow Performance Problems

If your device starts exhibiting lag or random stuttering after the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update, there are a few things you can try.

The first thing to try is a clearing of your cache partition. (Instructions near the top of this page.) This is a proven fix for lag issues and it could come in handy if your Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 5 or another device starts underperforming with Android 6.0 on board.

If that doesn’t work, you can try using an application like Qualcomm’s Trenpn Profiler to monitor your CPU activity.

If you don’t want to download another app, Android 6.0 Marshmallow also comes with a new RAM Manager tool (it can be found inside of the apps menu).

The RAM Manager allows you to see what’s slowing your device down, what’s using the maximum or minimum amount of RAM, and more. Keep an eye out for troublemakers.

You can also try deleting files that you no longer need, cut back on the amount of widgets that you’re using, and cut back on animations and transitions. If you want excellent performance on your device, you’ll want to be lean.

How to Fix Marshmallow App Problems

We’re seeing complaints about various app problems after the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. This isn’t surprising because apps always tend to act up after Android updates.

First, try installing the latest bug fix update to see if that helps stabilize the application. We’ve seen tons of applications get updated in the past week and these should help to cut down on issues. Try downloading the latest update, assuming it has good reviews.

Nexus-5-7

If an update doesn’t help, try reinstalling the app to see if that dislodges the problem. This is a quick fix that’s been known to wipe out performance issues.

If those fixes don’t work, and you can’t find anything on the developer’s forums (for instance, SoundCloud has a community forum), get in contact with the developer so that it’s aware of the issue.

How to Fix Marshmallow Random Reboots

We’re already hearing about random reboots in the aftermath of the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. This doesn’t come as a surprise. Random reboots (memory leaks) have plagued Nexus devices since the beginning.

First, try restarting your phone or tablet. If that doesn’t help, try updating your applications. Old apps that haven’t been updated in awhile can cause issues. You might also want to clear App data and cache. To do that, go into Apps in Settings, click your apps, and the clear data and cache.

If none of that works, you can try a downgrade (with the appropriate files, of course) or a factory reset. of your device.

How to Fix Android 6.0 Problems If Nothing Else Works

If none of these fixes work, there are several other resources to take a look at before contacting Google.

First, we recommend looking at Google’s Nexus Help Forum. There are tons of people on there that are willing to help with issues big and small. If you can’t find your fix here, you should go there next.

We also recommend taking a look at Android Central’s forums and XDA-Developers for potential fixes for Android 6.0 problems.

If you can’t find anything, we recommend performing a factory reset on the device to bring everything back to the way it was when the device was first bought. Make sure all of your files are backed up before you do this.

If that doesn’t work, contact Google and see if it will send you a replacement. It just might.

10 Nexus Android Marshmallow Release Date Tips

Your Nexus Android 6.0 Marshmallow Release Date

Your Nexus Android 6.0 Marshmallow Release Date

Today is the first Android 6.0 Marshmallow release date for Nexus users. But unless you install it manually, there's a very good chance you won't see the update arrive for your Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus 7, or Nexus Player.

While it would be nice if Google rolled out Android 6.0 to everyone at the same time, that's not how Google roll outs work. Predicting your exact Nexus Android 6.0 release date is going to be close to impossible. So is predicting your Android 6.0 Marshmallow release time.

Android updates can appear at all hours of the day. We've gotten prompts at 8:30AM and we've gotten them at 11PM. Updates roll out randomly in stages and Google's already confirmed Android 6.0 will follow standard procedure.

If you're not familiar with Google's Nexus Android roll out process, here's a Google engineer describing the roll out process in great detail. You're going to need to remain patient and check your device a couple of times a day.

Google's Android roll outs typically take a few weeks so it could be a few days or even a few weeks before you see the prompt for Android 6.0.

Try backing up contact via pc first then go to Settings>Apps Manager>Contacts>Clear Data.

Note this will delete all ur contact.

Once done restore the contacts from PC.

      It should work fine.

My nexus 5 was upgarded to 6.0, 3 days back. Since than a weird issue is happening. Every time I receive a call and once the call has ended, the screen goes blank for a while which means you can not cut the line by pressing the Red phone icon on the screen. You have to wait until the line disconnects automatically. After the disconnection, I must press the Power button twice to bring back the screen. Has anyone
faced this issue N wats the solution to it.?? Appreciate the help.

Same problem with my Nexus 6. Found two workarounds on the web (sorry lost the original links):
          1) settings -> accessibility-> use power button to end call.
          Check this option ON.
          Then reboot.
          Check the above option off.
Apparently this results in a recalibration of the proximity sensor. My problem has gone away 90% but not 100%
          2) double tap power button and screen will come on

When you connect the Nexus device to the pc, open the notification regarding the connection from the drop down menu. Choose the option for data transfer.
Marshmallow allows choosing the options ‘charging only’ or ‘data transfer’ separately.

hey friends i am using micromax android-1 mobile and one major problem that i am facing is that, when i remove one memory card and insert the other one (actually i have got 2 memory cards for my cell phone); it asks me to erase and format; it before using it and this causes all the data to get erased from it and there’s no other option available there. i have ticked the automatic back-up option in the settings but this has not helped as such. All this issue has crept up after downloading android MARSHMALLOW. so if anyone can help me out with this please mail in at :[email protected]

    thank you.

after using my nexus 5 as a campfire stick to jam a marshmallow onto and gently hover it over an open flame i’ve experienced my contacts burn up. just leaving some charred remains of what should have been added to some yummy chocolate for my glorious little treat. but now i can’t even call for back up because all my trusted suport people are nowhare to be found…not just on my more human than human nexus 5, but on my Google contacts recovery list. I assume some fat little android drone has snitched all the un-burnet sugary goodness and flown them up into his secret cloud hide out just to see me begging for my mommy to make it all better…somebody please help.

how can we reset my nexus 6 display when it displays revers mode i.e. from right to left

  18. John

    12/04/2015 at 4:52 am

I have project fi and got the ota update on my n6. Since then I have serious issues with the display. The contrast is way off during games. I contacted customer support and received several concerning replies. The first guy I talked to said there were issues they were aware of, and without my asking said he would send a replacement 6p in exchange for my 6 to address these issues. When I got the the RMA email it was for a n6 again. Following up with that I was told the rep made a mistake and they wouldn’t send a 6p. Imagine my disappointment. Further, they said that the marshmallow update was a beta, then backed up and said it was a light release.
The kicker is they told me I would have to flash the previous version of marshmallow after receiving the new phone or factory resetting mine, because as of now the only ota from factory is the buggy version of 6.0.
I have screenshots of the correspondence, as well as the original emails. I would warn anyone not to update to the current version of marshmallow. Google and project fi knowingly sent out a version to in effect make paying customers beta testers. Not cool in my book… They even sent me links for the flashing of the old code while stating it is my choice to stay with marshmallow, stay with factory, or do the unrecommended flash.

I just did the upgrade and have taken a bath. My screen actually divides itself into a high/low visual and will not settle back until i power cycle it. I wish I had never done the upgrade. I am a bit taken back by how poorly thought out this was. I also have a Plantronics Bluetooth ear piece that is connected but won’t accept the call until i manually accept the “Bluetooth” from the drop down after depressing the BT icon. Sad! and it’s 4 days old! I have to rethink my purchase of the new PC from Google. I can’t afford any drama when I need to use it.

Yes . . . Found a solution for all of my Nexus 7 / Android 6.0.1 problems. It is called the “trash barrel” and that’s where that piece of junk went. Just bought a Samsung tablet as a replacement and it looks to function perfectly. Only regret not having disposed of the troublesome Nexus 7 much sooner.

This is a later version of Marshmallow on my Nexus 5x and so maybe irrelevant. After an update, I was unable to sustain a wifi connection (and in the house, I do both data and phone using wifi with airplane mode on. I could not make phone calls, I could not browse the web (for more than a second). I did a fast/recovery boot and cleared the cache. Magically, no more problems. I do not understand why the cache should affect things, but it seems to be the case that it did.

Hello friends I have a problem with my LG Nexus 5. The image starts to move up or be placed in a lira color. As the screen is between lira color to white, the phone receives calls and regular works, but without the image or blurred image

I have a serious problem after upgrading my Galaxy Note 5 to Marshmallow. Now the internet calls on Skype, WhatsApp, Hangouts, Viber, Imo, LINE are not working. Does anyone else has this issue? Rest of the functionality is fine but internet call is either not connecting, or disconnects/connecting after first 5 seconds.
    Regards,

    • Maxx

      04/29/2016 at 4:15 am

      Hey Rasheed,

Have exactly the same issue. Googled it but there is nothing yet.

        04/29/2016 at 4:58 am

Hello Maxx…Exactly. I can understand. It is really annoying and how come they don’t know about this issue. You know because of this I flashed the whole thing and reinstalled the android and since have been trying to downgrade but not helping. Even factory reseted a couple of times….
Anyhow, I was told by somebody that this seems to be problem with proximity sensor. When your screen goes dark, then the call disconnects. So you can try this: Use headphones and don’t let the screen switched off. It worked for me but still a temporary solution. Please lemme know if it helps you too.
Frankly speaking, it really pissed me off..all this buggy OS!

          Hi Rasheed,

I found an comment describing the solution! At least it worked for me on my Samsung S6 with default Android 6.0.1:

          Taken from :

          Comment from Shah Rah:

The SOLUTION to solve the beep issue on Android 6 and WhatsApp:
          ******************************************
What you would like to try is to head into settings>Applications>Applications manager>Whatsapp>Permissions and activate all of them.

Then after that DO NOT ACTIVATE POWER SAVING MODE! Some bug is forcing power saving mode to kill any active threads that is hogging your internet during sleep mode… Hope that helps
          ******************************************

I tested it to narrow it down and basically you have to have to do both above-mentioned to make the call via WhatsApp without getting annoying beeps and call drops! Works with charm as on my older Android phones.

          Hope this helps some people.

          • Rasheed Hussain

            04/29/2016 at 5:44 am

Yeah let me try that. But did you try the open screen option with handsfree? That at least worked for me.
I hope the android developers know about the issue.

    04/29/2016 at 4:14 am

Got S6 with Android 6.0.1 and since then cannot make any calls via WhatsApp only may send messages.
When calling, it connects for 2-3sec. and then starts beeping like when having another incoming call (which in fact is not the case) and then the call ends.
I have tried everything in the settings of the application and granted access to all, but it still does not work…..
Anybody has experience the same or a similar issue. (Not talking about the every minute beep configurable notifications)

Since upgrade to marshmellow 6.0.1 my note 5 could not make any single call over network. Pls help

    • Rasheed Hussain

      05/01/2016 at 2:54 am

@Ahmad, exact same problem here. IF you read my comment above, you will find the temporary solution. It seems to be problem with proximity sensor. Try calling on the network with headphones and don’t let the screen sleep. Try to keep the screen alive by tapping it or anything else. I hope it will help. It worked for me. I know it is very annoying. I could not call either with 6.0.1 and cannot downgrade it now…..

Hi Ahmad, Sorry to hear that. I thought you were talking about internet call. I do not know the solution to that. You can check the factory reset if it works.

I guess u should take a back up of ur phine data and factory reset it once. Then restore the data.

I had a problem where the update was stuck on reboot screen. So marshmallow has many issues.

      Hope this helps u.

Remember about backing up on PC else u would loose everything.

      Goodluck

Hello, I’m having some serious sound issues with certain games, is that on the developer or the 6.0.1. Update for the Nexus 7 2013?

      05/09/2016 at 2:18 am

Try Uninstalling the games ur facing problems with but do sync them with facebook or gmail if there is option so u dont loose ur progress. Then download CCleaner and clear the cache and unrequired game folders. Install the game again and it should work normal for u.

      Goodluck.

This whole article was horrible, all they are doing is recommending a bunch of stuff that is not even close to fixing the problem. Come on guys, get with the game, if you don’t know of a for sure fix, just shut up.

Does Google not TEST updating to 6.0.1 before launching ?! My nexus 7 is stuck in a loop of non-updating draining the battery, while I’m making do on my ipad. I hope the 2 proposed solutions work, and honestly, I’d sack the whole flourishing team responsible for making this thing available when it’s nowhere near adequate, and as said in the article problems are COMMON. I can’t describe how mad I am with whomever bunch of idiots answer for this screwup.

    TLDR:
    (1) Turn feature off and back on
    (2) Forget feature’s settings
    (3) Boot into safe mode and “further troubleshoot”

This article literally provides ZERO helpful information for all of these problems.

I own a Huawei P8Max with Android 6.0. After installing several apps I get the message ” Sorry, an error occured. Your home screen icons will be re-arranged to their default positions”. After that the icons become immovable and stuck on screen. Even if the app is uninstalled, their icon remain on screen and cannot be removed. Also icons for newly installed app does not appear on screen. My only solution is to reset the phone to its original factory setting which delete everything . Is there any other way that is less troublesome?

The next “trick” works for me:
    – go to Settings
    – go to Network connections> Tethering and Mobile hotspots
    – turn Mobile Hotspot to ON
    – wait 10 sec’s and turn Mobile Hotspot to Off
    And I can activate WiFi.

Sometimes I have to do it twice, but in General it works after the first shot.
