How to Reset a Frozen Galaxy S7
This quick guide will explain how to reset a frozen Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Both phones are nearly two years old but are still very popular, even if they are slowing down. The Galaxy S7 doesn’t have a removable battery, meaning you can’t pull out the battery if it’s frozen or unresponsive.
Learning how to reboot your phone will save you lots of trouble when facing other problems. Instead of going to a carrier store for help a reboot will fix almost all minor issues.
Read: How to Move Apps to the Galaxy S7 MicroSD Card
On older Samsung Galaxy phones you could pull out the battery if the phone was acting up, that’s no longer an option. Instead, you’ll need to do a hard reset by pushing a few buttons in a specific order. With these phones starting to show signs of age, this is one trick all owners will want to know.
How to Reset a Frozen Galaxy S7, S7 Edge
Those paying attention during setup may have actually seen the tip for how to reboot a frozen Galaxy S7, as Samsung mentions it. If not, here are the quick and easy steps to do it yourself. As a reminder, this will not erase any data or content on your phone.
“If your device is unresponsive, press and hold the Power key and the Volume down key simultaneously for more than 7 seconds to restart it.”
All owners need to do is press the power and volume-down buttons at the same time, and hold both down for 7-8 seconds. Push, hold, and wait. After 7-8 seconds the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge will vibrate, turn off, and reboot. This should resolve most problems.
For some, the Galaxy S7 may reboot into a maintenance mode like what’s shown in our image below. In this case, use the volume keys to navigate the on-screen menu and the power button to select reboot. Highlight restart and hit the power button to restart your phone.

That is all you need to know about doing a quick reboot or reset on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. These same steps work for the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Additionally, a similar process reboots new Samsung phones too. Good luck, and drop us a comment below with any other questions or concerns.

So the S7 has been out for what? 1 month? And there are already reports of the phone having problems? I have an S6 and I was thinking about upgrading, but I might think again. Are there any other issues about the S7 that anyone knows about?
STEVE HOENIG
03/17/2016 at 11:49 pm
Yes. Upon restart, the phone disregards fingerprint login by design, requiring a PIN reset. BUT the PIN you entered earlier is not recognized as correct. Thus, you are unable to access your S7.
Even a PIN reset by the Android Device Manager is not recognized as correct. No resolution. Master Reset is not working on the S7 either. Phone must be replaced per, T Mobile tech support.

By far the WORST performing phone I’ve ever had. Not one day goes by without problems. After 3 weeks upon purchasing it, I took it in for a factory reset, which is a pain in the butt but supposedly wipes it clean and leaves you with a completely new system. No hardware problems reported. Nevertheless, the phone is hyper-sensitive, fires off messages, texts, emails, etc on its own; freezes often, and re-boot does not respond; opens apps and programs at will without me touching the device; occassionally opens and closes things as if another person is working it while I sit and watch. The list goes on. I cannot wait to pay this off so I can get a different phone. This phone is so bad, I’m considering switching over to iPhone.

Mine froze for the time just suddenly and I got scared cause I noticed as I looked down at it, and I have had it for about September 2016 and I haven’t had one problem until tonight so regardless od popular belief it is a very good phone and these complaints others have had I have not but I googled how to reboot it and it instantly worked with NO problem but I LOVE the phone and I still think its a great phone.

OMG Thanks so much .. I purchased the S7 Edge on launch day Last Friday here in Adelaide Sth Australia so you can imagine my dismay when it froze completely yesterday with totally black screen and no response at all …This morning I got up and decided to investigate solutions via the internet prior to taking it back and your solution worked a treat .. Happy camper now so Thank-you for your tip

I plugged my s7 in before bed then woke up to an unresponsive black screen.I had to reset phone by holding volume button down and main button on front.smh it took 4 tries I’m not to happy with this considering my phone is only 1 week old. Hopefully no more problems

My screen has been black since last week. Optus won’t give me a new phone but only a ‘replacement’ phone (2nd hand reconditioned) once I take it in because of some 30 day bullshit.

Yes, I did try to reset my Galaxy S7 because some application caused it to froze completely. There’s an error message keep flashing on the screen that the app has stopped again and again when I try to open it. Finally hard reset the phone in recovery mode and now stuck with Factory Reset Protection.

I had a strange issue… Moved apps to the sd card, shut the phone off a few days later. When I turned it on some of the apps were gone, I thought. On the apps page there were spaces between the other apps. Turns out these blank spaces, if I held for a few seconds it treated it as the app was there, but I could uninstall the app but could not launch it. Very strange issue.
Above with the shut off needing a PIN number and not finger scan… Yes..annoying. But mine does remember the pin. If not why would a factory reset not fix a forgotten pin.

I plugged in my Galaxy S7 (AT&T) last night, confirmed on the screen that it was charging, and powered it off successfully. Similar to others here, when I turned the phone on this morning, I got nothing but a black screen. The blue LED was blinking seeming to indicate a working status. I called the S7’s number from a different phone and although it rang, no amount of manipulation on the black screen would answer the incoming call (suggesting it was not just a missing image but a dead touch screen). THANKFULLY, your reset guidance worked successfully! With a new phone less than 2 weeks old acting up, I predict more opportunities to use this handy trick.

I had the same problem. My phones only a week old and I couldn’t turn it on even though it was fully charged. The blue light was blinking and everything seemed to work… except the screen. A hard reset got it going again. Hope this isn’t going to be a common occurrence.

I tried this hard reset. Called tmobile, went to tmobile, and even went to Best buy. The Samsung guys at best buy tried the hard reset at least 10 times. Still a black screen with a blue blinking light. I’ve only had the phone for like an hour. So annoying.

I have an S7 that is about 3weeks old and everything went haywire about the 3rd day. Restarting every couple hours, would take all nite to charge, always on clock, that I like, quit working. Several other little things… I did a hard reset and that cured it for a couple days. Now I am back to restarting. Seems like everytime it restarts it changes a few of the settings back to original default. Just not the same 1s everytime… Wish now I would have kept my HTC M8 awhile longer till these bugs got werked out…

I’ve had this problem twice but it’s usually because I’m trying to do too many things at once and the phone can’t keep up.
The first time I left the phone to sort itself out, but I’ve just used this reboot method and it’s fine now. Thanks a lot. :)

Had mine for about a month, and its starting to act up. This morning the screen, home, power buttons were not responsive and I could not access the phone features. Luckily found this site and did a reboot. working ok since but I agree with others, phone is too new to be acting up already, never been dropped and has been in a case since new.

It won’t work for me, had kept my s7 on charge last night & after waking up i see its on always on screen ( which i keep on ) but the time it was showing was 3 hours before, so i guess it got stuck at that time, now the screen is unresponsive. I tried to boot it but it came to black screen with Bootloader exception [ RST_STAT = 0x10000000 ]
And a few more things written in red which i cannot control from the volume key.
Even after i try to boot from here the screen goes black for 10-15 seconds and the same thing comes back with a blue led continuously flashing
My phone is just 2 weeks old

So disappointed with my S7, freezes all throughout the day especially when changing from doing one thing to another.
Hard reset wouldnt work either, twice I have had to open the sd card tray as this was the one and only thing that would make it un-freeze after being unresponsive for atleast 15 mins.
Also had the issue of someone ringing the phone but it is un-answerable, simply nothing would make it stop ringing for over 3 minutes.
It also fails to connect to my windows laptop, cannot easily connect or see files, images, data etc… even after downloading new samsung usb frivers for the laptop. So disappointing….!!!
I feel like this Samsung S7 model is a total lemon.
Where is Samsungs response to all these issues on a brand new and expensive product?

Ok I am updating my own post.
Went to Samsung customer service today in Bangkok.
They looked at my phone, immediately saw the issues but didnt necessarily know how to fix them.
After trying different cables they could get the images from the phone to be accessed by their samsung laptops.
So they said they need to do a fresh software install and I would lose everthting that was not saved.
Fresh install done, sim and ss card put back in.
Problems again immediately, whwn I took the sd card out (32g Kingston class 10) the phone immediatwly seemed to improve, I mentioned this the the guy so he tried my sd card in a different samsung s5 or something and it performed fine.
So he said leave it for 4 hes and our techniciams will change the motherboard.
4 hrs later I returned, new motherboard installed.
Put my sd card and sim in and problems straight away again, freezing, lagging, buttons not working.
So I took the sd card out and again it improved instantly, so I have concluded the SD card is conflicting with all aspects and functions of the phone.
I went and bought a siper speed 64g San disk sd card but am yet to try it but I am confident the old sd card is the problem.
Cheers

IMO the S7 is a dud! I don’t think there have been more complaints about freezing on a premium mobile more then the S7 then any other mobile ever. Low light camera is great, however the picture quality being only 12MP isn’t as sharp as the S6 16MP. The screen quality on the S7 is only half as good as the S6. Yes there are a lot of positives also about the S7/Edge but the freezing, poor sound an screen resolution, doesn’t make the S7 worth the upgrade. Wait for the S8.

After 3 weeks from purchasing it, I took it in for a factory reset, which is a pain in the butt but supposedly wipes it clean and leaves you with a completely new system. No hardware problems reported, no malware, nothing diagnostic but they wiped it clean just so I had no more problems. Nevertheless, the phone fails daily: is hyper-sensitive, fires off messages, texts, emails, etc on its own; freezes often, re-boot does not respond; opens apps and programs at will without me touching the device; occassionally opens and closes apps/programs as if another person is working it while I sit and watch. As I write this I’m not touching the phone, but watching a page I didn’t open toggle back and forth. The list goes on. I cannot wait to pay this off so I can get a different phone. This phone is so bad, I’m considering switching over to iPhone. MAJOR FAIL, SAMSUNG. MAJOR FAIL.

@Greg Liotta totally agree. The S7/Edge has to be the WORST premium mobile that has ever been released. There are couple upsides as mentioned above, but the daily freezing of the phone is enough to drive a person to drink. The POOR speaker (due to the waterproofing) actually makes me NOT care for waterproofing anymore. There are MAJOR issues with the S7 and too be honest, Samsung should just buy them all back and start again with next years S8

Honestly I’ve been looking on the web for a forum where these issues are addressed, but all I’m finding are little pages here and there (like this). I don’t know why I’m not hearing more about this, and it seems all the major review pages still tout this piece of garbage as the apex of smartphones. I’d be interested in a class-action on behalf of all the customers who’ve been hood-winked by this over-hyped phone. I totally agree with you, Samsung should buy them all back and start again. WORST PHONE I’VE EVER HAD.

I put my phone on the charger and walked away. When I came back about an hour later it was hot, I unplugged it and the phone has had a black screen and the red light has stayed lit up. I tried doing the hard reset many times with no luck, I’ve also tried other suggestions from other sites with no luck. I left it unplugged all night in hopes that it would die or let me reset it this morning, and it’s still not doing anything. Any other suggestions? I’ve had this phone less than 6 months. I really love it, but every galaxy I’ve had has had issues (I’ve had 4 different models), I’m about to go back to the iPhone.

My galaxy s7 edge keeps randomly saying “no Sim card found” when my phone dies and I charge it and turn it on. Even though there is a SIM card in it. I’m having to turn my phone off and back on again or restart several times before it finally decided to work. HELP please! The guys at Verizon did the same thing in this tutorial and it worked. However when I do this, it is still showing no SIM card. So frustrating!

I think my samsung s7 edge is in the worse state. I already tried to do the normal reboot such as hold the volume down and power key. At first everything went well. After couple of months, it happen again. As usual, i use the old trick. But now, its only can stand for only 5 to 10 seconds. After that, it keeps on freeze everytime i reboot. I totally cannot use my phone. I change to safe mode, it freeze too. I also wipe cache partition, reboot everything, factory reset, everything i tried, it still keeps on freeze. Is it the firmware ? I am not a heavy apps user, only some social messaging, no games, pictures no more than 500, no more than 100 musics. Can anyone help me please..

Since the larest upgrade my edge 7 kept on rebooting randomly. I tried to do the reboot by pressing the power and volume down buttons, but it is now frozen and does not reboot at all. What do I do now?

I just bought a new sealed in box Galaxy s7 edge. July 1, 2019. I took it through all of the factory updates, dated through March of 2019. It continued to work for several more days when suddenly the screen became semi-dark with the Samsung logo in the background. The logo faded from mid brightness down to near black on a continuous cycle. I looked at my paperwork and performed a power button/down volume reset various times. All I get is the “Samsung Galaxy s7 Edge” “powered by Android” screen.
That is all that I get. I can not turn the phone off, reboot – nothing at all. The Samsung screen stays on until it drains the battery and the phone powers off. Then I recharge the battery and start again, always with the exact same result. Help!!!
