If you go to AT&T, Sprint, Verizon or T-Mobile you generally get different options to upgrade and if you are on payment plans you may need to go through your carrier to finish up a final payment.
Keep in mind that Apple sometimes offers faster delivery options for select models while carriers offer faster deliver for others. Some models are pushed out to November, so check both places before you pre-order.

You can make an iPhone 7 pre-order for in store pickup. This allows you to reserve a time in line at your local Apple Store to walk in and pickup your new iPhone. You don’t need to use the iPhone Annual Upgrade plan to do this, but you can use that as an option.

You need to login and pre-order the iPhone 7 through Apple. Once you choose the iPhone, carrier and color you will be able to click on Check Availability for the storage size you want next to pickup.
Enter your zip code and then you will see a list of stores that are available to choose for pickup. You cannot do this for Black or Jet Black on most carriers.
This put you in a special line at the Apple Store and guaranteed you the iPhone model that you chose.
