iPhone 5 iOS 10.1.1 Update: 9 Things to Know in December
Its been a little more than a month since the iOS 10.1.1 release for iPhone 5. With that milestone in mind, we take an updated at look the most important things to know about the iPhone 5 iOS 10.1.1 update as we push into December.
The iPhone 5 iOS 10 update might be the last major operating system change for the aging former flagship. And while iOS 10 is a good one, it’s far from perfect.
In the weeks since its release, iPhone 5 users have been complaining about a myriad of issues with the operating system. Fortunately, Apple’s addressed some of these iOS 10 problems with bug fix updates.
The latest release is the iOS 10.1.1 update, a tiny bug fixer for the iPhone 5 and Apple’s other iOS 10 powered devices. iOS 10.1.1 has been out for a month now but its days are numbered now that we’ve entered the month of December.
The iPhone 5 iOS 10.1.1 update is small if you’re coming directly from iOS 10.1. If you’re coming from something older, say iOS 10.0.2, your iOS 10.1.1 update will be much larger thanks to the previous versions of iOS 10. Their features are baked in.
Today we’re taking a close look at the iPhone 5 iOS 10.1.1 update, bringing you up to speed on the most important things you as iPhone 5 owners need to know about your latest upgrade.
This roundup offers our quick iPhone 5 iOS 10.1.1 review, details about iPhone 5 iOS 10.1.1 problems, information about the iOS 10 downgrade, some iOS 10 jailbreak info, and more.
We’ll continue to update this roundup with new information as we get it so check back for regular changes.
iOS 10.1.1 on iPhone 5 Review: One Month Later
We've been using the iPhone 5 iOS 10.1.1 update for over a month and performance is still impressive on our device. Battery life on the iPhone 5 is still holding up and we haven't noticed any abnormal drain after a month of heavy use. iOS 10.1.1 battery problems are swirling around but our fossil continues to give us a full day of use over a combo of Wi-Fi and LTE. If you recently installed iOS 10.1.1 on your iPhone 5 and you're noticing weird battery drain, give it a couple of days to settle before fiddling with your settings. If the iPhone's battery fails to settle in two days after the installation, take action. We've tested the iPhone 5 and its iOS 10.1.1 update with several Bluetooth devices, ISPs, and routers and we haven't noticed any issues with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or LTE. We're using the iPhone 5 with AT&T's LTE/4G networks and both are behaving normally. We haven't noticed any random reboots or major bugs but we have experienced some UI lag which is par for the course these days. iOS 10.1.1 is stable but there's lag present when opening some folders, apps, Notifications, and Control Center. It's annoying but it's something we've seen in all previous versions of iOS 10. We also saw the problem with iOS 9 on board. iOS 10.1.1 is performing well on our iPhone 5 but we recommend seeking out a second or third opinion, especially if you're coming to iOS 10.1.1 from an older version of iOS like iOS 9 or iOS 8. You can no longer drop down to iOS 9 or iOS 8 so you'll want to be absolutely sure about iOS 10 and iOS 10.1.1 before making your move.

iOS 10’s are so excellent that it gave you two more albums for photos which now you got three sets of photos and it used more MB off your gadgets if you have Apple iCloud for photos have fun for when you added iOS 10 on you iPhone 5 it will delete all your photos then try put them back on again but not in the exact order that they took them off when you are on Twitter or Instagram they will put those albums on there also so that makes 10 albums of photos you will have Apple loves using your GB

Are you kidding me? Albums do not take up any space at all. All an album does on any device is use the pictures as references. It does not add duplicate photos

I am new to iPhone. i have iphone 5 with 16GB model, currently only 10GB space is free and iOS version is 8.1 (Phone is given to me, and hasn’t been updated for long time, since old owner uses new iphonw and it was just left out). so can i check for update and start the updating process so it will update all versions such as 9 to newest (10) which was resently released by apple. will it be alright to update like that? will update be successful on 10 GB space?

Just wondering if you updated your 5s with IOS 8 to IOS 10. I just picked up an old 5s that is still running IOS 7.1 !!!!
How is your phone working after the update to IOS 10?

I have a 5s and the 10.0.2 update is giving me a lot of problems. Apps freeze up, it’s slow…I hate it so far! Feels like a conspiracy to force me to upgrade a previously fine phone!

Totally agree with SCantu Maude. Don’t upgrade. Stick to the 9.3.5!

10.0.2 screwed up key functions on Notes and Contacts. Notes crashes when synching to iCloud. You can’t dial a phone number from Contacts, instead it creates an email with the phone number. Neither of these problems occur when you turn off Wi-Fi. But if you are Wi-FI these apps are broken.

Seems that sometimes out of nowhere either the network suddenly sends a barrage of notifications and no it’s not when I’m out of wifi! I get notification normally or so I think until some time later I have a succession of about 20 notifications. Last night after texting I suddenly got 5 of the same texts previously sent to me again! Good thing I have unlimited texting!
Why when I get notifications at the top of my screen I no longer can swipe up to have them removed earlier than the time out? I have wait about 7 seconds before they disappear. Imagine if I’m getting a few notifications in succession?!

I’ve lost all my utilities from the Control center except music. I can’t find flashlight anymore and do not disturb which were so useful. I’ve search online for how to restore the control centre but haven;t found any “help” available. ARGH !!! Everyone I know switched to Samsung and when they had the battery issues I was like – Im so glad I have my iphone. Now the IOS10 update has totally screwed me and they’re saying – that’s why we dumped our iPhones :(

I was having the same problem, but finally found that if I swipe up just to the right of the camera icon on the lock screen, the control center does eventually come up – it did take several swipes, but did eventually work. I don’t see the little control center tab on the bottom of the lock screen like I saw on the previous version, but swiping just to the right of camera icon does seem to get me to the control center.
Eddy
10/07/2016 at 12:07 pm
The control center is on a separate panel. You have to swipe to the right, after swiping up the music control.

Apple stopped signing iOS 9. You CANNOT downgrade…

Can you tell me step to step on how to do the downgrade??
Derri
10/22/2016 at 7:13 am
i’m so sorry, i forget. But easy to downgrade.
I just remember :
1. Turn off find iphone
2. Used cable data
3. Turn off iphone and when cable plug into pc/mac, just hold power and home button.
Note :
You don’t need IPSW file to do this, just used original firmware. Good luck

My iPhone 5 is now way slower. I’ve done a hard reset, and changed all the settings to the ones that are recommended to speed it up, but it can take up to 20 seconds to load an app (e.g. Facebook), and 3-4 seconds for it to register that i’m typing anything on the keyboard. If iOS9.x.x is working for you on an iPhone 5, don’t bother upgrading. I bought a Samsung on the weekend and it is very fast and, after getting used to Android, just as good as iOS. I’ve been an Apple owner for years, but hadn’t tried Android; now I’ve been forced into it, I might make the change permanently.

Swipe up from bottom as in previous iOS and then swipe to the side. Flashlight, wifi, Bluetooth buttons etc are there.

Ok, I played with it some more and u get the control center by swiping from bottom up, it’s just there’s no more arrow there, and took a few tries to get it to swipe up.

Just updated yesterday. wished I had looked before I did it!
There is no more swiping to the right to punch in your code. Now I get all the apps that were opened plus email reminders and I cannot figure out how to make it go away. I have to do 3-4 steps just to get back to my apps to mkae a call or send an email.
Totally frustrating!

Don’t like iOS 10 on iPhone 5s. Can’t retrieve voicemail message to change it. Touch not registering properly so problematic for texting, app use, etc. Overheats, battery drains quickly, apps blank, and very very slow. Checked different reviews which suggested it would be ok.

Aside from point releases, I NEVER update iPhone’s or iPad’s anymore beyond the version they shipped with. Apple makes it nearly impossible to revert. Their updates consistently make anything other than the most current device sluggish beyond belief. And for what, a bit of eye candy? Not worth it.

My iphone is a total freak!!!! It does weird things like you can hear music even when all the apps are closed. It completely changed the start screen and made it completely unresponsive. I have to do all sorts of motions with my fingers until it finally gives me the screen so that I can choose an app. Simply miserable! If there is a way I can get my old phone back….please let me know!
Had I even remotely known this was going to happen I would have never updated.

I have a 5S. Since updating to 10.0.02 I have lost some contacts numbers in the the contacts list. These contacts are in my contacts list with email addresses and other contact details. Can I restore to 10.0.0? This is very frustrating. Also my phone is heating up quite a lot. I’m continuing to re-calibrate.

Decided to update yesterday and 24 hours down the line, no serious issue. There is just a slight lag in speed but its not significant, considering all the other benefits. iPhone 5 has always had issues with the battery life so I really do not see much change. Either walk with a power bank or plug it in every time you are able to.

The upgrade sucks. First, you need to use your button to unlock your screen. That button is fragile, its always breaking if we press on it to much so, not a good idea. Second, when your writing a text to someone and you’re not done but your screen locks so you unlock it to finish your text, well, all you wrote, isnt there anymore. Third, I like my music in songs order. Well now I have songs like “Song cry” in the letter A because the artist is August alsina. So even if I want them by songs order, they’re all messed up.
I wish I wouldnt done it.

DO NOY UPDATE TO IOS 10!! It’s rubbish. Lost swipe to unlock function, really handy if you have big hands! Now you have to dislocate your thumb to do it 1 handed by pressing the home button twice.
Apps load slow and crash often for no reason. Messaging SMS is a far too complicated process now. Well done Apple, you took a product that worked….. my iPhone 5 running iOS 9 and screwed it in the name of progress!!! Not happy.

Same problem here with an iphone 5S upgrated to IOS 10.0.2: the Phone app freezes every 5 to 10 calls. You select the contact from the Contacts app (sometime even this slow down terribly !!!), you try to make the call and the phone does not make the call or it calls out and neither you or the called person can hear anything. At this point the only solution is to reboot the iPhone. Guys!! All this story is like dealing with the blue screens of MS Windows !!!
Ant fix or workaround solution?

Just upgraded to 10.0.2 and I started to get NO SIM INTALLED messages that makes the

IOS 10 is the worst IOS Apple can get! I’m tired of it. I have an Iphone 5 with 16GB currently with 7.65GB but I dont know every day I use my Iphone my space isnt 7.65GB, is now 7.34GB. I havent installed new apps or anything, its weird. Also the battery life sucks, now I have to charge my phone twice a day.

I thought I had lost my iPhone 5C, so got a new one (I’m a student, so that’s what I could get) — this, just as iPhone 7 got rolled out and the inevitable iOS update. But the old one was just found. On the old one, I have 9.3.5 — easy to use, apps don’t freeze, very reliable. But my new phone’s iOS 10 has issues with non-responsive apps, daily. At times, I have to close out of an app twice, just to get it back to where I need it to be. Frustrating, since I use the Google Maps app for my work.

This upgrade has been a big mistake for me with a 5c and my wife with a 5S. Don’t do it!!! There is massive Lag on Texts and other apps – In order to receive messages and emails we have to periodically switch Flight Mode on and off – As a Consequence we are both missing loads of important, urgent messages.
This is basically forcing us to buy a Tech Refresh – If I do, it won’t be an apple product and out goes the possibility of an iWatch too

I had to get a replacement iPhone 5 (for work), then found the original. The original (thanfully) still has the one before 10 (9.1.1, I believe). But iOS 10 made my replacement iPhone 5 wonky as hell — I *don’t* suggest the update *at all*.

I had lost my 5C, so had to replace it — the replacement got the 10 (now 10.02) update.
It’s what everybody said — reduced to total rubbish. Thankfully, I found my old one — it works *so* much better!
I’ve tried to find the directions for undoing the update –but the jailbreak method requires so many kinds of firmware and other downloads — it is a *very* complicated (seeming) method.
That said, if anybody knows how to do this successfully, I’d love to hear from you!
