Android 6.0 vs Android 5.1 Lollipop: What’s New in Marshmallow
In October of 2015 Google officially released Android 6.0 Marshmallow. And while most users are now waiting for Android 7.0 Nougat updates, some will never get the latest version of Android. As a result, many will want to know everything Marshmallow has to offer. This is a comparison of Android 5.1 Lollipop vs Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6.
With Android 6.0 the focus was on polishing the experience and improving battery life, not changing the entire look and feel of our devices. As a, result it looks the same as earlier versions while having a slew of new features.

Some of those new features are fingerprint support, improved permission controls, Google Now, and multiple battery saving measures. There are lots of new features in Android Nougat, but Marshmallow still has plenty to offer.
Whether you just bought a phone that runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow or realized you’ll never get an update to Nougat or Android O, this is a good place to start.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow is a free software update for all eligible Android smartphones and tablets, starting with Google’s own Nexus lineup. Most brands cover stock Android with their own interface, like Samsung, although many of the changes mentioned below are still included.
Just like with Android L in 2014, Google unveiled Android M in May of 2015 and released a developer preview for users to try on select Nexus devices. This allowed for months of testing before the October release date. And now, most Android devices have received the update.
Users will notice some visual changes to animations and effects, the lockscreen, homescreen, and the notification pulldown bar. Not to mention new volume and permission controls, a revamped application launcher and Google Now, which is now the Google Assistant. However, it’s behind the scenes where things really took off. Permission and security controls, fingerprint support, Doze battery improvements, automatic app and data backups, and so much more.

With Android 5.0 Lollipop Google completely changed the look and feel of Android. Above is a quick comparison showing users what changed in 2014-15, and below is a big slideshow detailing exactly what to expect from Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
To begin Android 6.0 Marshmallow rolled out to the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, 2013 Nexus 7, Nexus 9 and the Nexus Player. Then eventually others like Samsung, Motorola, LG, HTC, Huawei and more. The video below is a quick look at some of the many features in Marshmallow.
Some of the features, like the dark theme, were removed by Google before releasing the software to the public. That said, everything else is available on our phones or tablets. Every slide will have Android 5.1 on the left (if available) and the newer Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the right. Google changed the lockscreen in Android 5.0 to make things easier and simple. It's very clean and plain, with some quick swipe icons to instantly launch voice controls, unlock the phone, or launch the camera. In Android 5.1 the far right was a quick launch to the phone app, but not Google wants us using Google Now voice commands instead. It's a small change, and one some might not like considering a swipe would unlock right into making a call, but not it's into Google Now and voice commands. On the bottom of the lockscreen are three icons. The middle unlocks into the phone, the right side unlocks right to the camera for quick access to instantly take photos, and on the left, we have a microphone. This doesn't unlock your phone and instead fires up Google Now voice controls. This can be used to make a call, ask for directions, "go to gottabemobile.com" and any other voice command. Some of this won't be on devices from Samsung, LG, HTC and others. You can still use this to make calls, just say, "Call Mom" rather than going into the dialer and finding her. | ||||||||||||||||||

To be clear, in the new permissions model rogue apps can still access the internet, they just can’t access any of your data so what they can do with the internet access is severely limited.

Now on tap removed the very useful ability to select what search provider you wanted to perform searches with. I really liked being able to set the swipe-up command to be “perform a search with DuckDuckGo” and now that is gone :(

90% of everything you said about visual changes was wrong and every one of these are absolutely NOT new to Android M.
Lollipop does indeed use vertical scrolling in both the app tray and widgets. I am on Android 5.1 on a 2015 Moto E and both the apps and widgets menu look exactly like M.
Vertical scrolling is not new. Top row of apps showing recently used is not new. Vertical widget menu is not new either

Is the inability to “save image” from facebook to decice, a problem for Marshmallow6.0 or is that something different. Me and my wife each, just got the lgg4. Mine allows me to “save picture” to the devise. My wife’s phone will not save picture at all. Anyone know why? Also, I have turned off all notifications sounds from facebook, but we can not do the same for her phone.

My Samsung Galaxy S7 running Android M 6.0.1 has no problem with saving images from Facebook. Maybe you need to uninstall Facebook and then reinstall it.

Sorry, but Marshmallow is a disaster on my phone (Moto E 2nd Gen). If there was any way to change back, I’d do it in a heartbeat. It didn’t need changing and it’s made my phone a nightmare to use. Can’t find some things, others not working right. Wish that people would stop messing.

For me android 5 is easier to use for making calls. Flip and favorites dial. Google just want to make money and having reached near monopoly status, is less concerned with ease of use. It would have been easy to put a phone icon in the middle of the left hand side of the phone for people who want to use a phone.

OMG! Since the upgrade of Android 6.0 (Marshmellow) 3 days ago on my Samsung Galaxy s5, (via Verizon), my battery life went from one day to almost 4 days! Yay! They finally did something right! I LOVE it!!!!

It seems that on the Verizon Note 4, either Verizon or Samsung has replaced some things with custom (if similar) versions, which were not updated with Marshmallow. For example, in the notification tray, holding the Settings gear doesn’t do anything – I held it for over 15 seconds and still didn’t get the UI Tuner. Also, the Apps drawer still has horizontal pages, and the lock screen still has the dialer rather than the voice icon, and the volume sliders are unchanged.

Root your Galaxy / Mota G 2nd to 3rd Gen Android 5.1.1, you will need to flash a custom kernel on top of regular root method, otherwise you may end up in a bootloop. Just got a new cheap unlocked Alcatel Idol 3 4.7″ smartphone that came with Android 5.1. I upgraded it to Android 6.0.1 within the first 5 minutes of turning it on for the first time. I was surprised Alcatel had the update for it already. I’d rather have a better phone, but there are limited choices with smaller phones.
