Don't Wait for Under-Display Biometrics

We've heard this rumor many times in the past, but it looks like under-screen Touch ID, or perhaps under-display Face ID, could make it to the iPhone down the road. 

Initially Ming-Chi Kuo said the 2022 iPhone lineup might feature under-display fingerprint technology which would allow users to unlock their phone using a finger anywhere on the screen. Kuo then backtracked on this and now says the feature has been pushed to 2023.

Now Kuo is saying that his "latest survey indicates new iPhones in 2023 & 2024 may not adopt under-display Touch ID."

In a follow-up tweet, Kuo says he thinks a "real full-screen iPhone will come in 2024. High-end iPhones in 2024 would adopt an under-display front camera alongside the under-display Face ID." In other words, everything is up in the air right now. 

Another rumor, from a reliable source, suggests Touch ID won't be under the display of the iPhone 14 series.

Analyst Ross Young, who also at one point thought the iPhone 14 would get under-display biometrics, now says the feature has been pushed to the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16.

A more recent report, from Korean publication The Elec, claims the tech will be present on board iPhone 15 Pro models in 2023. However, this has been disputed by Young who says the technology will most likely come in 2024 on the iPhone 16.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman believes Apple will eventually "fully embed Face ID and the front-facing camera into the display itself" but that the move is at least three to four years away.
