After you get familiar with Android P, backup your phone, and stay up to date, you'll want to look out for Android P betas.
Basically, manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Motorola, Sony, OnePlus and more will release Android P early. These will be early beta releases that aren't stable, and they won't be available for everyone. That said, a lot of people can try them early to help test and improve the software. Last year after Android 8.0 Oreo arrived Samsung announced a beta program. And while it varied by region, select users received Android Oreo 4-5 months earlier than the rest of the world. That's a long time to use a phone with new software, fewer bugs, improved features, and other noteworthy changes. Basically, look out for betas of Android 9.0 P sometime later this month or in September from a lot of manufacturers.
